“Tata Group of Companies” has become a common household name and is a brand that India owns with pride. Jamsetji Tata established the parent company in 1868 and the corporation gained international recognition after purchasing several global companies.
It is one of the most important industrial groups in India. There is an independent board of directors and shareholders for every Tata company who guides and supervises them.
Jamsetji Tata worked in his father's company at the age of 29. He founded a trading company in 1870 with Rs.21,000 as its capital. Afterward, at Chinchpokli he bought a bankrupt oil mill and converted it into a cotton mill. He operated it under the name Alexandra Mill which he sold for a profit after 2 years.
He dreamed of achieving 4 goals- setting up an iron and steel company, a distinctive world-class hotel, a world-class learning institution, and a hydroelectric plant., In 1903, he opened one of a kind hotel -the Taj Mahal Hotel at Colaba waterfront. It the first-ever hotel with electricity in India.
After Jamsetji's death, his older son Dorabji Tata, continued his legacy to become the chairman in 1904 and went on to establish the Tata Iron and Steel company (TISCO).
Jamsetji Tata’s third goal was fulfilled by establishing The Indian Institute of Science with the first batch admitted in 1911.
In 1938, J. R. D. Tata was made chairman of the Tata Group. Under his chairmanship, the assets of the Tata Group grew to a large extent (US$101 million to over US$5 billion.) and in 1954, it entered the commercial vehicle market after forming a joint venture with Daimler-Benz. In 1968, Tata Consultancy Services was founded.
Ratan Tata became the chairman of Tata Group in 1991. In the same year, India opened up the market to foreign competitors, economic liberalization. Recently, in 2017, Natarajan Chandrasekara was appointed as the new chairman.
