Daag Dehlvi's Life and Background
Nawab Mirza Khan Dagh Dehlavi (1831-1905), was born and brought up in the red fort of Delhi where his mother was married to prince Mirza Mohammad Sultan, son of Bahadur Shah Zafar.
After his father’s death, he had to leave the red fort, and after the fall of Delhi in 1857, he had to move to Rampur where he lived in comfort for more than a decade. Later, his changing conditions, for good or bad, took him to other centres of renown like Lucknow, Patna, Calcutta, and Hyderabad.
Daag Dehlvi wrote romantic and sensuous poems and ghazals in simple and chaste Urdu, minimising usage of Persian words. He laid great emphasis on the Urdu idiom and its usage.
The selected ghazals of Daag Dehlvi are rendered by contemporary ghazal singers, Jagjit Singh, Noor Jahan, Ghulam Ali, Adithya Srinivasan, Malika Pukhraj, Mehdi Hassan, Abida Parveen, Pankaj Udhas, and Farida Khanum.
An Astounding Event From Daag Dehlvi’s Life
Daag was the toast of the town in his heydays. The 6 Nizam, Mis Mohammad Ali Khan, once recited a one-line verse to his courtiers and asked them to complete it.
Sharaab seekh par daali, kabaab sheeshe mein.
That was the uncomprehending one-liner. It was a challenge to the poets present.
Everyone of them tried to crack it, but failed to do so. As everyone drew a blank, the Nizam's gaze moved to his 'ustaad' Daag Dehlvi, The latter picked up the gauntlet and completed the seemingly senseless line in such a way that everyone was left speechless.
Here is the completed couplet:
Kisi ke aate hi saaqi ke hosh aise ude,
Sharab seekh pe daali, kabab sheeshe mein.
