This was named as Second wave or second phase of the COVID-19.
In the second wave of the coronavirus, vaccination drive has already started in India and also all over the world. The vaccine is mainly of two types like Covaxin and Covishield. These two are different from each other.
Now, let’s see the comparison between these two vaccines in a detail.
The government has decided and started the vaccination and it is giving to the people who are above 45years. From May 1st, 2021 vaccination shots are allowed for people above 18 years.
Developer:
The vaccine Covaxin has been developed by the Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech International Limited which is in association with the Indian Council of Medical Research which is abbreviated as ICMR and the National Institute of Virology which is named shortly as SII.
Type Of Vaccines:
Covaxin is declared as it is an inactivated vaccine, Covaxin has been prepared on the platform of tried and tested dead viruses.
The technology used to prepared this vaccine is Whole-Virion Inactivated Vero Cell-derived technology. This technology contains inactivated viruses that will not affect a person but it will teach the immune system to prepare a defense mechanism against the active virus.
These type of vaccines has come to action in the recent decades. Using this technology there are many diseases developed or prepared such as:
- Rabies
- Polio
- Seasonal influenza
- Pertussis
- Japanese encephalitis
Whereas Covishield is prepared from a different technology using the platform viral vector. This was prepared using chimpanzee adenovirus and it was modified to enable it to carry the COVID-19 spike protein into the human cells.
This cold virus does not affect the human but teaches the immune system to prepare mechanism against such viruses.
The exact technology used to prepare these types of vaccines is Ebola.
Doses:
There is no difference between the two vaccines when it comes to dosage.
Both of the vaccines follow a two-dose regimen which is segregated 28 days apart.
Storage Guidelines:
The storage of Covaxin and Covishield is almost similar in that they can be stored at a temperature of 2 to 8 degrees centigrade, which is generally a household refrigerator temperature. This temperature is most suited for Indian conditions.
As for the two vaccines the temperature range is almost similar, which makes the transportation and storage easier.
Efficacy:
Both the vaccines shown very great results more than the expectations and those results are very satisfactory.
The effectiveness of the vaccine called Covishield is nearly 90% as per the global reports. The effectiveness of the vaccine Covaxin is almost 81% according to the interim 3rd phase trial results.
On the other hand, Covishield showed a very satisfactory efficacy of 62 percent.
Approvals Of Vaccines:
The vaccine called Covaxin has been granted as a restricted-use authorization in the clinical trial mode.
The vaccine called Covishield has been allowed for the restricted use in emergencies which will prevent coronavirus infection in people above 18 years of age.
Price Of The Vaccines:
Both the vaccines are provided for free by the Government to all the COVID-19 patients. The cost of the vaccine is Rs.250 by the private hospitals and clinics.
Mode Of Administration:
The vaccines Covaxin and Covishield are intramuscular vaccines.
Side Effects Of Vaccine:
The side effects after the post-injection for the vaccine Covaxin which has been developed by the Hyderabad-based Bharat Biotech are redness in the arm, pain at the spot of injection, low-grade temperature, malaise, headache, vomiting, weakness, and fatigue.
Some other effects include difficulty in breathing, throbbing pulse, erratic heartbeat, swelling, and many more.
France has reported that the Covishield also had some side effects after the post-injection.
The side effects include pain at the injection spot, warmth, itching, bruising, fatigue, chills, fever, nausea, muscle ache, lumps, and malaise. Some other effects include coughing, breathing difficulties, nervous problems, and many more.
Age Of Beneficiaries:
Covishield vaccine can be taken by people who are above 18 years ago.
Covaxin can be given to the age of 12 years and above.
In India 145 million doses of the COVID, vaccines have been issued. More than 17 million Indian people received 2 doses successfully.
Bharat Biotech increases the production of up to 12 million doses in a month.
Every year India will produce 850 million doses of the Sputnik V vaccine.
After a long search, we concluded that there are mainly two types of vaccines to prevent the COVID-19. This blog clears you from all your doubts and confusion.
