The Forbes Billionaires List 2018 is released and we are proud to have 121 Indians on the list. The total count is 19 more than what was there previously, making India the 3rd country of the ultra-rich people after those from the US and China respectively.
And this is not the only reason why we should be glad. According to Forbes, the business magazine that produces an annual list, Mukesh Ambani, the energy and petrochemicals magnate, is the richest Indian as of date. In 2017, he was at 33rd rank globally, and he has jumped to 19th rank in 2018 with assets of $40.1 billion.
FYI, the Forbes List Of Billionaires 2018 is an amalgamation of 2,208 billionaires worldwide. The US has 585 billionaires and China 373 this year on the Forbes tally. Luckily, India is also an art of the "The Three Comma Club" with 121 people.
Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s founder has assets valued at $112 billion, which make him the richest man in the world this year. As the second richest man in the world, we have Bill Gates, Microsoft co-founder, whose fortunes are valued at $90 billion. Following them is investor Warren Buffet, who is the third richest man in the world with $84 billion wealth.
Here is a list of the top 10 Indians who made it to 2018 Forbes Billionaires List:
1. Mukesh Ambani
He is the richest man in India with assets worth $40.1 billion, from his petrochemicals, oil & gas industry. He is ranked 19th globally.
2. Azim Premji
The software entrepreneur with his company WIPRO is the second richest man in India. He secured 58th rank with $18.8 billion wealth in 2018.
3. Lakshmi Mittal
The international steel tycoon slid to the 62nd rank on the 2018 global list. He becomes the third richest man in India with $18.5 billion riches.
4. Shiv Nadar
HCL’s founder is the fourth richest Indian on the billionaire list in 2018 with riches worth $14.6 billion. He is ranked 98th globally.
5. Dilip Shanghvi
Founder of Sun Pharmaceuticals, occupies the 115th global rank to become the fifth richest Indian. He has net assets worth $12.8 billion.
6. Kumar Mangalam Birla
The Birla family is a family connected with the industrial history of India and deals in commodities. Kumar Mangalam Birla is the sixth richest Indian with a net worth of $11.8 billion, ranked 127 globally.
7. Uday Kotak
The banking magnet, the executive vice chairman and managing director of Kotak Mahindra Bank, is the seventh richest man in India. His wealth is $10.7 billion and global rank is 143.
8. Radhakishan Damani
Veteran Mumbai investor and India's new retail king, Damani is eighth richest Indian. With all his assets valued at $10 billion, he reserved the 151 global spot for himself.
9. Gautam Adani
The chairman and founder of Adani Group is the ninth richest man in India. According to Forbes, his net worth is estimated to be $9.7 billion. This ranks him 154 worldwide.
10. Cyrus Poonawalla
The tenth richest person in India is from the vaccines industry with $9.1 billion wealth.The chairman of Poonawalla Group, is at 170th rank on the 2018 Forbes list.
11. Savitri Jindal
With total assets worth $8.8 billion, she is the first lady on the list. At the 176th global spot, the Chairperson, Jindal Steel & Power Limited, is 11th Indian on the Forbes List.
12. Sunil Mittal
Sharing the global rank 176 with Savitri Jindal, he is the 12th Indian with a worth of $8.8 billion, to be on the list. He is better known as the Founder & Chairman of Bharti Enterprises.
Among the 121 Indians, the Indian pharmaceutical sector has the most number of billionaires, amounting to 16. It is followed by consumer goods industry with 15 billionaires, real estate with 9, software services with 8 and diversified investments with 8.
There are 9 others of Indian origin with assets over $2 billion spread abroad. But, this is all expected. The most interesting name on this list is of the youngest Indian, who is 39 years old.
