Sir Muhammad Iqbal, popularly known as Allama Iqbal, is one among the most famous British Indian poets. He was not only a philosopher and a politician, but also an academic barrister and scholar. 

Quick Glance of Allama Iqbal’s Life 

Born on 9th November, 1877, in an ethnic Kashmiri family in Sialkot, Allama Iqbal is admired as one of the most prominent poets, not only by Indians but also by Pakistanis, Iranians and other international scholars of literature. 

It was not only Iqbal’s poetry, but also Iqbal’s love for Kashmiri culture, which made him popular among the masses. In many of his literature works, he often mentioned about Kashmir and Kashmir’s culture. 

The first published poetry book of Allama Iqbal, ‘The Secrets of the Self’, appeared in the Persian language in 1915. Among other Allama Iqbal’s great works of poetry are – The Secrets of Selflessness, Message from the East, and Persian Psalms. 

If we talk about Allama Iqbal’s Urdu works, the most celebrated and admired pieces of literature include - The Call of the Marching Bell, Gabriel’s Wing, The Rod of Moses, and also a part of ‘Gift From Hijaz’.

Apart from all Iqbal books, it was his shayaris that brought out a different element of his personality. Shayaris were one of the most striking features of Iqbal’s personality. He recited shayaris amongst all groups of people, of all ages, in all genres and languages.

1. Amal se zindagi banti hai, jannat bhi, jahannam bhi,
Ye khaki apni fitrat mein, na noori hai na naari hai.


This Iqbal shayari on life has a deep lesson hiding in it. He has stressed that only positive action leads to success in life. If there is no action in life, there is no value of human life. 

2. Khudi ko kar buland itna, ki har taqdeer se pehle,
Khuda bande se khud pooche bata teri raza kya hai.


3. Dua to dil se mangi jati hai, zubaan se nahi ae iqbal,
Qubool toh uski bhi hoti hai jiski zubaan nahi hoti.


This Iqbal shayari highlights the fact that prayers, no matter how they are offered, are always accepted by Allah. But, if one doesn't asks for anything from allah in prayers, Allah can't fulfil his prayers. This couplet is similar to Mirza Ghalib's sher, 'Hum to fanaah ho gaye uski ankhen dekh kar "Ghalib",  Naseeb unke bhi hote hain jinke haath nahi hote.'

4. Khafa jo ishq mein hote hain, wo khafa hi nahin,
Sitam na ho mohabbat mein, kuch maza hi nahi.


5. Manzil se aage badh kar, manzil talash kar,
Mil jaye tujhko dariya, samundar talaash kar.
Har sheesha toot jaata hai pathar ki chot se,
Pathar hi toot jaye, wo sheesha talaash kar.


6. Koi ibadat ki chah mein roya,
Koi ibaadat ki raah mein roya,
Ajeeb hai ye namaz-e-mohabbat ke silsile iqbal,
Koi kaza kar ke roya, Koi ada kar ke roya.


7. Kaun rakhega yaad hume is daure khudgarzi mein,
Haalat aise hai ki logon ko khuda yaad nahi.


This Urdu couplet is a celebrated one from the many Iqbal shayaris on Ishq-e-Rasool, highlighting the fading faith of people in the Almighty, Allah. Iqbal has labeled the society of his time as 'khudgarz' (meaning selfish), having forgotten Allah and lost in materialism. In such a scenario, Iqbal does not hope to be remembered by anyone for his works. 

8. Masjid khuda ka ghar hai, peene ki jagah nahi,
Kafir ke dil mein ja, wahan khuda nahin.


This shayari is a part of Allama Iqbal's ghazal on ishq-e-rasool. This couplet reflects the holiness and piousness of the Mosque (Masjid), for the people who have faith in Allah. He asks the drunkards to look for the hearts of atheists to carry out their drinking routine. It is sometimes considered as a reply to Ghalib's sher, 'Zahid sharab peene de masjid mein baith kar, Ya phir wo jagah bata de ke jahan khuda nahi.' 

9. Na rakh ummed-e-wafa kisi parinde se iqbal, 
Jab par nikal aate hai toh apna aashiyana bhool jate hain.


10. Sone de agar wo so raha hai gulami ki neend mein,
Ho sakta hai wo khwab azaadi ka dekh raha ho.


Allama Iqbal Shayari on patriotism doesn't have a tough competition. This Urdu Shayari by Iqbal was written to motivate the people of Hindustan while they were ruled by the British. Iqbal said, let the people dream of independence and don't disturb them if they are sleeping peacefully. Maybe their sleep in the subjugated Hindustan brings freedom in the future.

11. Dil se jo baat nikli hai, asar rakhti hai, 
Par nahin, magar takat-e-parwaaz rakhti hai.


12. Hazaron saal nargis apni be-noori par roti hai,
Badi mushkil se hota hai, chaman mein deedawar paida.


13. Mana ki teri deed ke kabhil nahin hoon main, 
Tum era shauq dekh, mera intezaar dekh.


14. Mazhab nahin sikhata aapas mein bair rakhna, 
Hindi hain hum, watan hai hindostaan humara.


This Urdu couplet is a part of the famous patriotic song, 'Saare Jahan Se Acha Hindustan Humara.' and is another Iqbal Shayari on patriotism loved by India and Indians. Allama Iqbal has beautifully conveyed the message of each religion - to stay together with love and compassion. Being the follower of a different faith does not mean you are enemies to people of other faiths. You should consider them as your brothers,  born on the same homeland as you. 

15. Mujhe rokega kya tu ae nakhuda gharq hone se,
Ki jinko doobna hai doob jaate hain safinon mein.


16. Nahin hai na-ummeed iqbal apni kisht-e-viraan se,
Zara nam ho to ye mitti bahut zarkhez hai saaqi.


17. Purane hai ye sitare, falak bhi farsuda,
Jahan wo chahiye mujh ko ki ho abhi nau-khez.


18. Yakin mohkam, amal paiham, mohabbat fatah-e-alam,
jihad-e-zindagani mein hain ye mardon ki shamsheeren.


19. Sitaron se aage jahan aur bhi hain,
Abhi ishq me imtehaan aur bhi hain.


20. Hansi aati hai mujhe hasrat-e-insaan par,
Gunaah karta hai khud laanat bhejta hai shaitaan par.


21. Tere ishq ki intehaan chahta hu,
Meri sadagi dekh kya chahta hun.


22. Paerwane ko chirag hai bulbul ko phool bas,
Siddique ke liye hai khuda ka rasool bas.


23. Umr bhar likhte rahe phir bhi warakh sada raha,
Jane kya lafz the jo humse tumhare na huye.


24. Sau baar kaha maine inqaar hai mohabbat se,
Har baar sadaai tum dil se nahi kehte.


25. Teri rehmat pe hai munahsir mere har amal ki kabooliyat,
Na mujhe saleekah iltejah, na mujhe shaori namaz hai.


26. Husn e kirdaar se noor e mujassam ho ja,
Ki iblees bhi tujhe dekhe to musalmaan ho jaye.


27. Kisi ki yaad ne zakhmon se bhar diya seena.
Har ek saans par shak hai ki aakhri hogi.


28. Mat kar khaaq ke patte par ghuroor wa beniyaazi itni,
Khud ko khud me jhaank kar dekh tujhme rakha kya hai.


29. Kashti bhi nahi badali, dariya bhi nahi badala,
Aur doobne waalon ka jazba bhi nahi badala.
Hai shauk safar ek arse se yaaron,
Manzil bhi nahi paayi aur rasta bhi nahi badala.


If you have read through this Urdu Shayari by Iqbal, you must have been inspired to try until you succeed. Iqbal has emphasized on the permanence of troubles and will power of achievers by the example of a traveler going across seas. Ho jayegi teri mushkil asaan padha kar
Padhne ke liye agar tujhe kuch na mile to

31. Bura samjho unhe mujhse to aisa ho nahi sakta,
Kah main khud to hu Iqbal apne nukhtah chinoon main.


32. Teri dua se kaza to badal nahi sakti,
Magar hai isse ye mumkin ki tu badal jaye.
Teri dua hai ki ho teri aarzoo,
Meri dua hai ki teri aarzoo badal jaye.
