There are many types of marriages that people are unaware of and also were interesting to know which are so from ancient times and also mentioned in Hindu mythology. The first category is, on the basis of the number of mates

Monogamy

This is the type of marriage where a single individual is married to another individual (one man is married to one woman). This is the most common form of marriage and also the most ideal form of marriage. It is further divided into two types Serial monogamy, In this, after the death of one partner, the other one gets married the second time in a series that why it is serial monogamy. Non-serial monogamy This is a type where after the death of one partner another one doesn’t get married to anyone else he/she stays in the beautiful memory of his / her partner forever.

Polygamy

This is the type of marriage where one spouse gets married to more than one spouse. That is there is more than one partner. Under this, they are divided into three types. Polygyny Under this category one man is married to many women, you have heard this in ancient times, and also this is still practiced in some regions. 

Earlier this was done by kings to increase kingdoms by marrying girls from another kingdom, but now this is not under legal conditions. Sororal polygyny additionally this is a type of polygamy marriage where after the death of wife the man get married to the sister of his wife. Non Sororal polygyny this is a type where at the time after the death of his wife he isn’t married to the wife’s sister. 

Polyandry this category includes when one woman is married to more than one man. Here, it was done as women ratio to man was very less. Also, you know Dropti and Pandav from Hindu mythology one Dropti was married to five Pandav brothers this is the example of polyandry. 

Fraternal polyandry here in this type of marriage after the death of male spouse female get married to his brother. Non-faternal polyamory as the name suggests in the wife is not get married to his husband’s brother after his death.

Cenogamy

This is a type of marriage wherein a community where men and women are married to each other, all men and women are husband and wife to each other. This was done for better rearing of children as a community.

Further on the basis of class., according to the caste of partners this category is divided types in three forms. Hypergamy is also called Anuloma here the boy with a higher caste gets married to a girl with a lower caste. Although caste isn’t a matter nowadays but earlier it was. Hypogamy this is also called pratiloma here the status of a girl is always higher than the status of a boy. Homogamy in this type of status is not any attribute of marriage or this type of marriage takes place between a spouse who resembles themselves in a certain way.

Another it is divided into on basis of choice of mate selection

This type of marriage is based on preferences and priority of mate selection

First, it is cross cousins marriage it takes place when one of the mother’s brother’s daughter/ son is married to the father’s sister’s daughter/ son, further it is divided into three types. Matrilateral Cross Cousin Marriage:- this happens when a man marriage to mother’s brother’s daughter. This type is preferable in Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Patrilateral Cross Cousin Marriage:- when the man marriage to father’s sister’s daughter.Bilateral Cross Cousin Marriage:- this happens when man marriage to a girls who is simultaneously mother’s brothers and father’s sisters daughter either when men marry each other sister.

Parallel Cousin Marriage when marriage takes place between either children of two sisters or two brothers. Matrilateral parallel Cousin Marriage in this type the children of two sisters get married. Patrilateral parallel Cousin Marriage when childrens of two brothers get married. Levirate also know has devar vivah where the widow wife is married to the brother of dead husband. Sororate , this type of marriage takes place when man marry his wife’s sister after her sister’s death also called as Sali vivah.

On the basis of Rules of marriage

There are certain factors in society or rules created within a community according to which a couple or a family has to take a decision so as to get accepted by society. These are further divided into endogamous or within the same community and exogamous outside the community.

Endogamous marriage is further classified into four categories. 

Caste endogamous in which marriage take place within same caste of couple. Subcaste endogamous in this the marriage is done under same subcaste. Varna endogamous varna is a Hindu ancient factor matched by most of pandit hindu families. Tribal endogamous in type of marriage the marriage takes place within a same tribe these are divided into various parts which are very interesting.

The first one is mate selection by purchase:- in certain tribes the groom family has to purchase bride by giving bride price

Second is mate selection by service:- in this the groom has to serves bride house by domestic help in exchange of marriage.

Mate selection by probation:- in this the young man and women are allowed to live together in live-in relationship and if groom isn’t able to satisfy the lady than he has to pay the women.

Mate selection by intrusion:- this marriage happens when a boy have intimate relation with the girl and then refuses to marry her. So, one early morning she go to the boys house and take her seat in one corner of the house, then if after all phyiscal force applied by the family members the girls didn’t left her place so at the end the neighbours have the right to force boy to formally marry that girl.

Mate selection by capture:- in this type of tribal marriage the boy capture his girl by giving some certain symbols to the girls like kissing her or by proposing her in a occasion organised in village center by Village people itself.

Mate selection by trial:- this is very fascinating tribal marriage in this the boy has to show his bravery in front of all village people, on a bright day the village organize an event where all young man of the village take part in a race in which the all the boys have to reach a tree at the top of which coconut and gud( jaggery) is attached. All the girls have to dance in a inner circle and resist boys to reach the tree they can beat them with broom, or even tear their cloths or anything else, so this how the boys have the show their powerness by overcoming all those hurdles and after he won he can choose any girl to marry him.

Mate selection by mutual consent:- in this type of tribal marriage is simple where both man and women mutually decide to marry each other with their family consent too.

Mate selection by exchange:- this marriage takes place in exchange between brothers of one house to sisters of other house.

Exogamous marriage:- this type of marriage take place in outside the community, these are on the factors of Hindu religion called as outside same gotra, outside same pravara, outside same sapinda or even outside the same village, these are because of beliefs that having same gotra, pravara, sapinda or village make them brothers and sisters by relation.

On the basis of Religion

India is a secular country as we know we follow many religions and even there is a lot diversity in marriage of different religions. So our next classification is based on religion like Hindu forms of marriage, Muslim marriage, Parsi marriage, Buddhist marriage, Christian marriage, Jain marriage, and also every region in India have their own type of marriage like Punjabi marriage, Assamese marriage, Odiya marriage, Kashmiri marriage, Marwari marriage, and Gujarati marriage and many more but here I am going to tell you about forms of Hindu marriage as they are very unique.

Hindu forms of marriage

Brahma vivah:- this is the ideal form of marriage with on dowry, acceptance of both the sets and most common prevalent in Hindu community

Dev vivah:- dev is considered to a priest in this this is type of marriage, where parents marry their girls to a priest as a token of respect to him or called as daan .

Prajapatya vivah:- prajapatya means a king so when parents marry their girl to the king or governor of King.

Arsh vivah:- arsh is called as rishi means saint so this the parent marry their girls to a Saint by offering him with a pair of cow and Bull and some clothes.

Gandhrav vivah :- this type of marriage is by mutual love consent between the couple. It is similar to modern love marriage.

Asur vivah:- asur vivah is the marriage in exchange of some money to the bride .

Rakshasa vivah:- when the marriage take place with force abduction is called rakshasa vivah.

Piashacha vivah:- this type of marriage took place when a boy rapes a girl or by another other intimate activity.

One the basis of contemporary forms of marriage

Contemporary forms of marriage follow the new culture of marriages like Arranged, love marriage, love-arranged marriage, and cross-culture/ caste/religious marriage.
