Top 9 Fun Activities You Can Do in Siquijor This Summer
If you’re heading to Siquijor, here are some fun activities that you can do in the island this summer.
1. Diving around Siquijor
There are 23 dive sites around Siquijor and it is relatively easy to manage three to four dives each day. The main attraction in siquijor is the world class macro and night diving.
Paliton Wall is a spectacular wall dive that starts at 7m deep and runs down to over 40m. The dive is often blessed with great visibility and the wall has a large overhang and a cathedral like cave opening. Soft corals and fans cover the surface of the wall and it is home to fusiliers, mackerels, anthias, lionfish and glassfish. Watch out too for solitary tuna or barracuda passing in the blue water.
Maite Point is the place for macro life. You may see mandarin fish, pipe fish, Spanish dancers, nudibranch, cuttlefish, shrimps and so on. The Tubod sanctuary contains over 170 different kinds of corals and a number of giant clams.
This is the number one reason why I want to go back to Siquijor. I’ve always wanted to dive but I haven’t gotten my license yet. Thankfully, classes are almost done so my friends and I will be heading back to the island for that much awaited diving lessons this summer. We can’t wait to explore one of the most amazing diving spots in the Philippines.
2. Cliff Diving in Salagdoong Beach Resort
Salagdoong’s Cliff may not be as high as that of Ariel’s point or that of Malapascua’s Cliff, but it has that clear turquoise water you can jump over and over. The dark blue seawater in Malapascua or that of Ariel’s point scares the hell out of me. I would usually think of sharks lurking around the area waiting for their meal to jump. Fortunately, you wouldn’t have that kind of thinking in Salagdoong.
Still, the jump can be intimidating especially if it’s your first time. The first and second diving ledges are 4 and 5 times higher than me, respectively. But no worries, there’s a not-so-secret technique that you can do for you to have a successful jump. All you need to do is not think of anything at all. Just run on the ledge and then jump. Our mind is our worst enemy and it will constantly tell us not to jump that’s why don’t think… just jump.
Your fear will definitely be gone after you hit the water. Trust me! You will feel excited to do it again after your first try. Think like Superman on your second attempt and it will be an awesome cliff jump.
You will only have to pay a minimal entrance and parking fee and you can have that unlimited cliff diving experience.
3. Tarzan Jump in Cambugahay Falls
The falls in Cambugahay are remarkable in their own way. But what I like most about the place is the vine rope where one can do a Tarzan jump. The next thing I like is the waterfall cliff where one can practice cliff jumping before heading to Salagdoong’s much taller cliff. You can also take some great photos of the 3 cascading waterfalls.
The only downside to this leg of your trip is the stairs to the falls and back. Going down to the falls is just easy. The real challenge is going up. It can really tire you out and it is definitely not suitable for oldies. It’s best if you bring bottled water or Gatorade with you. You’ll need it after the climb.
There’s no entrance fee in Cambugahay Falls. You’ll only need to pay the parking fees ranging from 30-80 pesos depending on the type of vehicle you’re using.
4. Longboarding
Longboarding in Siquijor is an emerging hobby and sports for longboard enthusiasts around the country. Siquijor’s asphalted and hilly roads are perfect tracks for you to improve on your longboarding skills. I’ve also heard the island recently hosted a National Longboard Competition.
5. Spelunking in Cantabon Cave
Cantabon Cave is the most famous among Siquijor’s 45 discovered caves and it will definitely challenge any spelunkers with its 300m long and 10m wide maze-like chambers.
6. Beach Hopping and Swimming
This is probably the number one reason why most foreigners go to Siquijor. It’s turquoise water will entice anyone who sees it to swim. The water is so good that you will be lured to dive in it when you arrive at Siquijor’s Pier.
7. Snorkeling and Free Diving
If you don’t know how to dive, other alternatives for you are snorkeling and free-diving. You can do this anywhere around the island. Just bring your snorkeling gears and a buddy with you as safety precaution. If you want to be amazed with the life down under, snorkel or free-dive at the dive sites mentioned above.
8. Road Trip around the Island
The combined fresh air and scenic landscape make Siquijor the ideal place for a road trip. Add some music while you’re on the road and you’ll feel like you’re in a movie or something. This is the only place I’ve ever been to where driving feels like an excursion and not a burden. No heavy traffic. No fumes from other vehicles. All you see is that magnificent landscape of an island filled with colors that are pleasing to the eyes.
9. Sunset Watching in San Juan
After a day’s activity, there’s nothing more relaxing than to watch the sunset. And you can only find that along the shores of San Juan, a coastal town in Siquijor. I really envy the people living there because they will always see that beautiful sunset. I’ve always dreamed of living in a place where one can always see an astonishing display of the sunset. I guess I have to add this in my list of favorite sunset locations for future property considerations.
Whether or not you will do all these fun activities, always remember that Siquijor is a place for you to unwind and relax so just chill, ok? Also, the activities above are not written in any particular order.
