Amancio Ortega is the founder of the iconic Inditex fashion group, best known for its chain of Zara. This Spanish billionaire came from very humble beginnings. His family was so poor, that they practically had to beg for essential items. The shy boy who was deeply ashamed and humiliated that they couldn’t pay vowed to never let his family suffer poverty again and became the world’s richest man back in 2016. Here’s his incredible story:

1.     Amancio Ortega

Amancio Ortega was born in a small village in Spain. His family lived in a poor, run-down house struggling to make ends meet his father worked at the local railway station and his mother was a housewife. They were so poor, that his mother had to beg for essential items for their family, and one day when he and his mother went to get some groceries, they were rejected.

2.     Early Struggle

Amancio Ortega was deeply hurt and humiliated at the family’s inability to pay. He vowed to never let his family suffer poverty again. So he left school to earn some money to keep food on the table. At only 14. He began working for a local shirt maker where he learned to make clothes by hand before opening his first Zara store.

3.     Started making Bath Robes on a Smaller Scale

He worked hard in his teens and gained experience in the field and by his mid-twenties Amancio Ortega, along with his first wife and his siblings, started by making bath robes sowed by the local women. But it wasn’t long before he established his factory and began his iconic journey in fashion.

4.     Started his First Business

In 1963, Amancio Ortega opened his first business and began making dresses after a whole decade of making dresses. In 1975, he opened his first Zara store, soon Zara started to become more and more popular, and in no time it went beyond Spain and took over the world. Zara has come a long way to become one of the world’s most successful fashion brands.

5.     Created an Empire

The company that was founded with only 30 euros today has stores in more than 90 countries and has a net worth of 14 billion euros. It is inspiring how the poor boy, who was ashamed and humiliated, that his family had to beg for essential items who vowed to lift his family from poverty and provide a better life for them, became the world’s richest man back in 2016, and today has a Net worth of 57 billion dollars, Amancio Ortega, the Spanish billionaire behind Inditex, the world’s largest clothing retailer that owns Zara, Poland, Bear Bershka, Massimo Dutti, Stradivarius and other brands who began with only 30 euros and a dream to never experience Poverty again built an empire and became one of the most successful business giants in the world.
