Principles of Reflective Practices

Meaning

Reflective Practice is the ability to reflect on one’s action so as to take a critical stance towards one’s own practice engaging in a process of continuous adaptation ad learning.

1.     Think about how you work

Thinking is first principle in reflective practices. It means thinking about our work. Why we are doing what we are doing?

Ex. As I am doing MBA I can think about why have joined this course? How have I planned to do it and? What all difficulties I may face? What changes I can expect after completion of the course and How am I going to apply new gained knowledge in real life.

2.     Acknowledge Your strengths and weakness:

When we think it is very important that we identify our strengths and weaknesses. We should be able to accept our weaknesses as well as strengths. We should also add to our strengths an turn our weaknesses into strengths.

Ex 1. – If I am not a tech savvy person and I have to make a presentation using the computer then I can approach a person who is tech savvy. I can learn from him how to operate computer. This way I can turn my weakness into strength.

Ex 2- If your are good speaker an every one appreciating you for that then you should also accept all the appreciation.

3.     Consider the Impact of your actions on your Profession-

Whatever action we are taking after thinking and reflecting should not have any adverse impact on our profession.

Ex. If a writer who eagerly wants to publish his book but his mentor suggested to make changes in certain scenes as it was plagiarized. Writer did not think about it and published his book from local publisher. His book did not get the huge response as writer was predicting. He was framed for plagiarizing and had to pay some penalty for it. If he had implemented his mentor’s advice then this could have been avoided.

4.     Review your methods, identify and resolve problems-

In reflective practices when we are reviewing our actions we should try to identify the possible problems which will arise and try to solve it.

Ex.-  While doing my MBA I realized that there are certain basic concepts which I am not aware of or I don't feel confident enough to solve them. so I tried to identify those concepts and did my based to learn it.

5.     Be open to listening and try out new ideas-

Instead of saying I can’t do this or this impossible for me to learn we should try to learn it. We should try and listen to a person who has more knowledge about the thing which we want to learn.

Ex.- If one of my friends knows about making personalized website. While she is teaching me how to make my own website, I should listen to her and try to learn it, instead of saying that it is impossible for me learn this. Unless I will give it a try I cannot learn it.

 Conclusion:

In conclusion I can say that reflective practices help us to understand and reflect our actions. It is very important to think about our action and the impacts of it. It help us to turn our weaknesses into strengths.
