Population Explosion: Boon or Bane?
Ever since the first industrial revolution the quality of human life has increased. With this came better education, laws, and many other things. There was exponential growth in the fields of medicine. This increased the human life expectancy and lead to the growth of worldwide population. In the post-world war era, the world population grew significantly while casualties decreased.
Can population be considered as a boon? well, it depends on several factors. These include emigration, immigration, death rate, population decline and incline. Countries with low population and high emigration highly benefit from population booms. If the population is greater, then the working population is greater. This will reduce the dependents in the country.
This isn't always the case. It can be highly problematic at times. It can lead to high unemployment rates as the job opportunities are limited. This in turn leads to poverty and starvation. Countries with higher population face lots of issues in governance and development. They need massive infrastructure and lots of funding in order to successfully govern and maintain the country. Basic facilities also become hard to access.
Recent research suggests that countries with lesser populations are more developed, happier, and have better governance than those with higher populations. Some examples of this can be seen in the European countries. One often overlooked example is of Kerala. Kerala has the highest human development rate. It is considered as the most developed state in India. It has the highest literacy rate in the whole country. Bihar is one of the least developed states in India. Kerala has a population of 3 crores whereas Bihar has nearly 13.5 crores.
To conclude with I feel that having a controlled population is the best way to deal with this. But it is all left to the way in which the people and the government utilize this matter.
