What is Metacognition?

Metacognition is an awareness of one's thought processes and an understanding of the patterns behind them.

Metacognitive skills allow you to organize and evaluate your thought process related to learning and problem-solving. Another way to define metacognitive skills is your self-awareness regarding the information you do and don't know and how you work to recall or retain knowledge regarding a particular subject.

STRATEGIES TO ENHANCE METACOGNITION ABILITY:

The two strategies which I will use to enhance Metacognitive abilities for my students are as follows:

2. Graphic Organizer- Mind map

KWL TABLE

KWL, an acronym for what you know, what you want-to-know, and what you Learned, is an effective way to read with purpose. KWL is easy to apply and can lead to significant improvement in your ability to learn efficiently and to retain what you have learned.

The active steps follow the acronym KWL and are generally organized in the form of a three-column chart:

The KWL method can be applied to any learning situation, such as taking a class, listening to a lecture, watching a documentary, participating in a classroom activity, attending a workshop and so on.

GRAPHIC ORGANIZERS:

Graphic organizers, also sometimes called cognitive tools, help us to consciously improve our thinking processes. By using a graphic organizer, we are more effectively thinking about our thinking. They assist us in:

• Organizing our thoughts.

• Creating connections between things we know.

• Thinking more deeply about something.

• Visualizing processes and procedures.

Examples of graphic organizers include:

• Mind maps.

• Flow charts.

• Spider diagrams.
