The Mediterranean Gecko is one of the most common species of geckos in the United States and by far the most common in my area near Dallas, Texas. The Mediterranean Gecko is an invasive species that is believed to have travelled on ships and spread to around 130 countries around the world. These geckos only reach about 5–6 inches in length. These geckos prefer to hunt at night around lights that attract insects. The gecko waits patiently near a light source, not moving until an insect lands within reach. They then strike with lightning speed and grab the insect. The problem is that like most invasive species, these geckos can out compete other native animals and hurt there populations. Unfortunately there is nothing we can really do. These geckos can hide just about anywhere there is a crack and are often found inside homes. Sometimes they will even lay eggs in the window seal.
This is a juvenile Mediterranean Gecko that I caught a few years back. I took a few macro shots of it. I even shared a Dos Equis with him. Not really, but he was content with posing for me on a bottle cap.
