I Just Bought a Lego Set and It's the Best Decision of My Life

Investing is hard, you’ve got so many stocks, bonds, paintings, commodities, and real estate. So let’s just keep it simple and go back to our childhood. Just invest in LEGO sets. Keep it simple.

Before you declare me crazy, hear me out.

Investing

Sorry to all the LEGO fans but this purchase was an investment. I won’t be opening the box because then it loses around 20–30% of its resell price. Instead, I will just be storing it in my attic.

You can’t just invest in any type of LEGO set, you need to choose the right one.

According to a study from the Higher School of Economics in Moscow, small and big-sized sets appreciate more than medium-sized sets. After they analyzed 2322 sets from 1987 to 2015, they concluded that a LEGO set had an average return of 11%. That’s higher than the stock market.

I prefer to only invest in modular buildings.

Modular Buildings is a series of Lego building toy sets introduced in 2007, with new sets usually being released annually.

5 years after they have been released, the sets are usually discontinued. When the set is no longer being produced, the prices soar on the secondary market.

So I bought…

This set looked like the perfect match. It was released in 2018, so it’s close to being discontinued, it’s one of LEGO’s modular buildings.

According to Brickeconomy, the best site for tracking LEGO sets, the set is very close to retirement.

And once the set is discontinued, the price is expected to double. So the €520 I invested should turn into about €1.000. Pretty good I think.

Final Thoughts

I came across this whole niche when I wanted to order the exact train which I had bought 5 years ago. When I looked on LEGO’s official site, it said it was discontinued. When I looked on eBay, the train was selling for €500 while I only had bought it for €150. I was shocked.
