Hypospadias Treatment Frequently Asked Questions - Answered

The responses to frequently asked questions about hypospadias treatment are provided here. This is not personalized medical guidance for any particular patient; it is generic medical knowledge. Please ask any particular queries you may have to your urologist.

The penis is impacted by a congenital defect known as hypospadias.

Three symptoms are typical of hypospadias:

  1. The urethral meatus, which is the orifice through which boys urinate, is situated lower than usual.

  1. The penis may flex somewhat. Usually, the penis is curved downward or tilted forward in this manner (typically called chordee or penile curvature).

  1. The foreskin may not fully develop (typically called Dorsally hooded foreskin).

    Some Common FAQs

How common is hypospadias?

One in approximately 150 to 300 infant males has hypospadias, which is a reasonably common condition. Although milder forms of hypospadias are much more frequent, pediatric urologists at Sci Hospital are skilled in treating both moderate and more severe forms of the condition.

Does my child require hypospadias treatment?

This is dependent on several variables, including how severe your child's hypospadias is. Optimal voiding (urinating), as well as sexual function, is the ultimate objective. Your doctor will talk to you about the particular type of hypospadias that your kid has and whether surgery could be necessary during your office appointment.

Will my child remain asleep throughout the procedure for hypoplasia?

Under general anesthesia, a hypospadias correction is carried out whilst the patient is unconscious. The safest method for performing hypospadias surgery is this. To reduce the quantity of anesthesia used during the treatment and minimize pain as the child emerges from anesthesia, our anesthesia experts place nerve blocks toward the back of the region around the penis. All ages of children and newborns are treated by our anesthesiologists, who specialize in this field.

How long will it take to repair hypospadias?

expending on how severe the hypospadias is, the procedure might take a variety of lengths. Repairing mild hypospadias can take 60 to 120 minutes, however, fixing more severe versions of the condition can take more than three hours.

Why is pre-operative testosterone provided to my child before hypospadias repair?

Before hypospadias repair, we advise one or two testosterone pre-operative injections for some individuals. This aids in enlarging the penis before hypospadias surgery and enhances surgical results. The timing and specifics of the injections will be discussed with you if we believe your child is a good candidate, and we will write you a prescription for said testosterone there at the time of your child's office appointment.

What degree of discomfort should my child anticipate following hypospadias surgery?

Although each child's amount of pain varies, generally speaking, the first two- or three days following hypospadias correction are when patients feel the most suffering. Following surgery, we will prescribe painkillers. Usually, no narcotics are provided following hypospadias surgery. The placement of a urethral catheter may occasionally result in brief bladder spasms or pain. To aid in preventing bladder spasms, we will prescribe medication. The brand name for this drug is Ditropan® or oxybutynin.

Should I expect to experience bleeding following hypospadias surgery?

Within the first several days following hypospadias correction, there is often some leaking onto the patch or into the diaper. If you notice any significant bleeding or dribbling, apply pressure to the affected region for five to ten minutes. Please contact our team if the bleeding continues.

What is a typical healing appearance following hypospadias surgery?

The penis may appear bruised, swollen, and red at first. The skin may also seem black, and stitches may be visible. The white and yellow coating on the penis may appear a few days following hypospadias treatment.
