How We Think About Wedding Florals (And Why It Changes Everything on the Day)
The flowers are one of those decisions that people sometimes leave too late or hand off without much thought. And then they see the photos and they feel it. Because wedding florals aren't decoration. They're the visual tone of the entire day. They're in every photo. They're in the memory.
We take that seriously at The Flower Shed. It's not something we say lightly.
The Consultation Process and Why We Don't Rush It
Flowers are personal. What one person considers romantic another finds fussy. What reads as elegant in someone's mind might feel sparse or overdone in person. So before we touch a single stem we sit down and we actually talk. About the venue. About the colour palette. About what the couple wants people to feel when they walk into the room.
I remember working on a wedding a while back where the brief was white and green. Very classic. Very understated. But when we got deeper into the conversation it turned out the bride grew up in a garden full of native plants and what she actually wanted was something wilder than the initial brief suggested. So we brought in some beautiful textural natives alongside the whites and it ended up being one of the most striking setups we've created. That conversation would have been missed if we'd just taken white and green at face value and ordered stocks.
Why Seasonal Flowers Are Always the Right Call
We source seasonally. That's not a compromise. It's genuinely the better choice and we'll tell you why. Flowers that are in season are at their peak. They're more vibrant. They last longer.
What We Love Working With in Melbourne's Climate
Garden roses when they're right. Ranunculus in cooler months. Natives year round because they're genuinely beautiful and they're ours. Pampas and dried textures for couples who want something with movement and a bit of edge. Tulips in season. Dahlias when it's warm enough. We match the flowers to the time of year and the feel of the wedding rather than the other way around.
How We Handle Big Days vs Intimate Celebrations
We do both. And we approach them differently because they are different. A large scale wedding with 200 guests and a formal reception venue needs a completely different kind of planning than an intimate dinner for 30 in a garden or a small hall. The logistics are different. The quantities are different. The way the flowers need to work in the space is different.
But our standard doesn't shift based on size. A 20 person elopement celebration gets the same care as a 250 person formal reception. The couple standing there looking at their flowers shouldn't be able to tell if we had six weddings that weekend or one. It should always feel like we made it just for them.
What Makes Our Wedding Florals Different
Our team has backgrounds across floristry design and events. That combination is not that common. Most florists know flowers. Fewer know how flowers work in an event context where lighting changes and scale matters and the arrangement that looks stunning at 3pm needs to still look stunning under dinner lighting at 8pm. We think about all of that before the wedding day arrives.
We use only premium quality flowers. We'd rather not put our name on it.
FAQs
How far in advance should I enquire about wedding florals for my Melbourne wedding?
We recommend reaching out at least 6 to 9 months before your wedding date especially for peak season weddings between October and March. Popular dates fill quickly and the earlier you enquire the more time we have together to develop a floral concept that actually fits your vision. Last minute enquiries can sometimes be accommodated but early is always better.
Do you only work with large weddings or can you help with small intimate ceremonies?
We cater for everything from intimate elopement celebrations to full scale receptions. The planning approach changes depending on the size and the venue but our standard for quality in things like bridal bouquets and table arrangements stays the same regardless. Small doesn't mean less considered.
What's included in a full service wedding floristry package?
This varies depending on the couple and the brief but typically covers bridal and bridesmaid bouquets along with buttonholes and ceremony florals like altar or arch arrangements. Reception centrepieces and any additional styling elements are discussed during the consultation. We work out what you actually need rather than starting from a fixed package and adding things on.
Can I request flowers that aren't currently in season?
Sometimes yes and sometimes we'll talk you out of it. We've gone the extra step to source out of season blooms for clients who really need a specific flower for their wedding and we're happy to try. But we'll always be honest about whether the quality will be what you're imagining because we'd rather have that conversation early than have you disappointed on the day.
How do I start the process of working with The Flower Shed for my wedding flowers?
The best way is to send us an enquiry through our website or give us a call on 03 9689 9927. From there we'll set up a consultation to talk through your vision your date your venue and your budget. The more you can share early the better the starting point we have.
One Last Thing Worth Saying
Flowers at a wedding aren't something people remember in isolation. They remember how the whole thing felt. But the flowers are one of the main things shaping that feeling from the moment the bridal party walks out to the moment the last guest leaves the reception. We get to be part of that for couples across Melbourne and we genuinely don't take it for granted. If you're planning a wedding and you want wedding florals that actually mean something come and talk to us. We're at 638 Barkly St West Footscray and we'd love to be part of your day.
