How to Launch Your First Affiliate Site

Starting an affiliate website and becoming an affiliate marketer is a great way to make money online. You’ll discover that learning how to create an affiliate website isn’t all that difficult, and the reward can be thousands of dollars in affiliate commissions per month.

In this post, I will walk you through the fundamental steps needed to:

  • Choose a niche for your website
  • Begin by creating your first affiliate website
  • Set up the necessary hosting, domain, and other tools
  • Create a content strategy that will result in affiliate sales

Let’s get started!

Niche Selection: What Will Your Website Be About?

You may have previously created a website that was not an affiliate website, or you may have no prior experience creating websites. No worries in either case! This guide will cater to people of all skill levels.

The first thing to consider has nothing to do with hosting, domain names, or website software. Of course, all of these factors are important, but the first thing you must decide is what your website will be about.

And, because your goal is to make money with affiliate marketing, you must exercise caution in making this decision. For example, creating a website dedicated to assisting local homeless people may make you feel good. However, earning money through affiliate marketing is unlikely.

“The Money Is In The Niches”

You’ve probably heard this expression before. I’m not sure who first said it, but I’d like to shake their hand. That’s because it has led me to build a money-making website over the years, earning money through affiliate marketing.

Niching Down

The term “niching down” refers to focusing your energy on serving a smaller group of people.

Niching down makes it easier to:

  1. Find people
  2. Determine their specific pain points
  3. Deliver to them in such a way that they feel you truly understand them

You can really target and speak to your niche in a way that truly resonates because you aren’t trying to deliver something to a broad group with mixed interests and pain points. It’s almost as if you’re getting inside their heads.

This is how you’ll quickly gain massive traction.

Niches Inside Niches (Within Niches)

Assume you wanted to target the fitness market. First and foremost, that is far too broad. If you ask almost anyone, they will tell you that they want to be fit. It’s difficult to create a site that caters to such a diverse audience. The problem is, how do you get people to visit the site without spending a lot of money? You must understand that there are niches within niches. It is less expensive and easier to target these smaller groups than it is to target a larger niche.

The fitness niche can be further subdivided, for example:

  • Weight loss
  • Exercise
  • Muscle building
  • Yoga
  • Healthy eating
  • Cardio
  • Pilates and more

This divides the fitness niche into more focused segments. A niche within a niche. Can you take it a step further? Sure. Consider the cardio niche.

There are numerous types of cardio:

  • Walking
  • Long-distance running
  • swimming
  • cycling
  • Cardio exercises you can do at home
  • Circuit training
  • Jump-rope
  • Rowing
  • Boxing and many more

Don’t Go Too Far

Concentrating on a specific niche can help you target people more effectively. For example, you could create a website centered on the fitness niche of rowing. You could even narrow it down to rowing for weight loss, giving you some lateral movement to complementary topics like a diet.

But there’s a catch…

Don’t overthink your niche selection. Rowing for post-menopausal women, for example, is a niche that simply does not have enough people to target.

Make Sure Your Niche Has Future Affiliate Opportunities

You should also ensure that the niche you choose has affiliate opportunities. Consider the people in your niche. If you can’t think of at least four or five different types of products they might want to buy right away, it might be time to look into other niches. If you really want to see if there are any existing affiliate opportunities, you can join some affiliate networks or look for specific products to review in that niche. Then confirm that you can be compensated for recommending them online.

It doesn’t hurt to go the extra mile. Furthermore, you will most likely receive confirmation in less than an hour as to whether or not there is something to promote. Spending an hour finding products to promote is a lot cheaper insurance than spending hundreds of hours building a site only to have no options for promotion.

How to Make an Affiliate Website Step-by-Step

You’re now ready to take action and build your first website.

Let us take note of what you require:

  • A domain name
  • A web host
  • A content plan

Don’t be concerned if you’re worried about technology stuff. Many of the moving parts are now taken care of for you by hosting companies’ one-click installs. Actually, they want to make this technological stuff easier for you. When you think about it, they’re motivated to simplify the process because it means more people will start websites. So you can be confident that you have what it takes.

What Exactly Is a Domain Name?

Because you’ve already decided on a niche, deciding on a name for your website should be a little easier. As previously stated, spend some time researching and deciding on a niche. Go back and do that now before purchasing your domain and hosting.

A domain is simply a convenient way for someone to direct their web browser to your website.

What Exactly Is a Web Host?

So, what exactly is a web host, and how does it differ from a domain name? If your domain name is analogous to your home’s address, your web host is analogous to the land on which your home is built. It’s storage space on a server, which is simply a more powerful computer than the one on your desk. You build your website in that space.

Selecting Your Domain Name Provider and Web Host

I’ll recommend a domain name provider and a web host below (yes, it’s an affiliate link, so I’ll be compensated if you sign up with it). If you don’t agree with my recommendation, that’s perfectly fine — no hard feelings! In any case, I strongly advise you to conduct your own research. There are literally thousands of web hosts and domain name providers on the internet.

My motivation is to make this as simple as possible for you by recommending a host I’ve worked with over the years and know to be beginner-friendly.

Do I personally use this hosting company? Yes.

Bluehost has been in business for nearly two decades. It hosts over two million websites, is very reasonably priced, has its own servers and facilities in the United States, and offers a one-click WordPress installation (very important for de-complicating the whole thing).

Plan your content

A written blog content strategy is what distinguishes good blogs from truly great ones. Are you ready to save time, increase traffic, and increase your blogging success?

Here are the five steps to creating an effective blog content strategy:

  • Define your objectives: Having a clear goal will help you push through all the other steps, the hours of writing, and the inevitable obstacles.
  • Conduct some market research: While frustrating, it demonstrates how a very small amount of effort can transform something from lukewarm to hot. You’ve heard the term “going the extra mile” before.
  • Create topic ideas and keywords to target: Keywords are the foundation of an effective blog content strategy. You’ll struggle to rank well in search engines if you don’t have them. You’ll struggle to get a lot of consistent traffic if you don’t rank well in search engines.
  • Make a content calendar for your blog: A content calendar keeps you on track and establishes a system to ensure that your content is always of high quality and published on time. The best calendars also include social sharing and email marketing information to help keep things organized and simple.
  • Create amazing content: You’ve got your keywords and a content calendar, and you know what you’re writing about. It’s now time to start creating content.

Conclusion

Creating a blogging site is a popular way to start an affiliate site. You can start growing your affiliate marketing website if you can create good content that attracts readers.
