13 Reasons Why is an emotional and exhausting rollercoaster, but will provide you insight into some of the serious issues that teens face, which we take for granted. High on emotions and with a gripping storyline, it has garnered millions of fans who love the show. Today we present some interesting facts about 13 Reasons Why that even the most diehard fans may have missed. Alright, Let’s bring the show on the road.
1) Based on Book
13 Reasons Why is based on a book of the same name by author Jay Asher. Katherine Langford was cast to play Hannah over skype. “I didn’t get to see anyone or be super involved in the casting process, but I think Selena and everyone who chose to cast us was so elated”, Katherine told PopSugar.
2) Katherine was to play Jessica
Katherine also auditioned, to play Jessica, But that role was given to Alisha Boe.
3) Puppies on Sets
Puppies were brought on to the set to help the cast with filming emotional scenes.’‘I know there was one scene I wasn’t around, but they had therapy dogs on set”, said Dylan Minnette (who played Clay Jensen). There was a puppy per hour.
4) Shows Soundtrack
Dylan Minnette helped pick the show’s soundtrack. He said “I had a dialogue with [the creator] from the get-go about what songs should be on the soundtrack. I love that he was so open and it was very much a collaboration. There are so many artists on the soundtrack that I’m so proud, of.”
5) Dylan’s Bands
Dylan also said: “Clay’s room is filled with posters of my favorite bands. There are other artists that I would love to have in there, but they aren’t artists that I feel Clay would listen to. You’ll see there are a couple of Arcade Fire posters, Bon Iver The Cure, The Shins, and some other cool things. I wanted to make sure it all felt very real, and I wanted the vibe to be appropriate.’‘
6) Different versions of Suicide
In the book, Hannah commits suicide by taking an overdose instead of slitting, her wrists, as shown in the Netflix adaption. According to creator Brian Yorkey, the decision to change Hannah’s method of suicide to slitting her wrists was made with a specific goal in mind. `` We worked very hard not to be gratuitous, but we did want it to be painful to watch because we wanted to be very clear that there is nothing in any way worthwhile about Suicide.

‘’ Hannah was originally going to survive in the book, Because in the books she swallows pills, author Jay Asher thought about having her parents take her to the hospital where she could get her stomach pumped saving her life.’‘.
8) Emphasis on Suicide
“Once I realized that the message of the story would be stronger [ if she died ] and that it would be more of a cautionary tale. I felt that was the way to go” said the Director.
9) Same Posters
Clay and Hannah have the same poster on their bedroom walls. If you look very carefully, you can see that Clay and Hannah both have the same Arcade Fire Reflektor tour poster up in their rooms.
10) Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez was originally going to play Hannah Baker, but she backed out and became an executive producer on the show. Instead, she said she knew the book had such a huge cult following and she wanted viewers to be able to see themselves in Hannah.
The song that Clay and Hannah danced to is called the Night We Met’. It’s by Lord Huron from their album Strange Trails.
12) Learn to Drive
Chris Navarro had to learn to drive for his role as Tony. Christian couldn’t drive before he started. Filming 13 Reasons Why, But he had to get his license, so he was able to drive the red Ford Mustang, seen in the series.
13) Colour Difference
There’s a clear visual difference between the scenes before and after Hannah’s death. Scenes from before Hannah’s death are bright, and colorful and feature a warmer color palette. While scenes from afterward are darker more washed out and use cooler colors like blues and greys. It’s an easy way to decipher what timeframe the scene is from as there are a lot of flashbacks in 13RW.
14) Ross’s age
Ross Butler was 26 when he filmed 13 Reasons Why. Ross, who plays 19-year-old high school student, Zach Dempsey was 26 when he filmed the first series.
15) Book’s name
Jay Asher originally wanted to call the book Baker’s Dozen. The Autobiography of Hannah Baker, A baker’s dozen, is one more than a normal dozen aka 13.
Katherine Langford is Australian. Katherine, who was born in Perth, was super-excited to get the chance to live the American dream during filming.’‘ This may just be me, but I feel like everyone’s dream is to live as an American high school student. The semicolon tattoo, we see Clay getting in Season 2 has a special significance, because it represents suicide prevention as part of Project Semicolon’s, mission.
18) Matching Tattoo’s
Selena and the cast got matching tattoos. Selena, Tommy, Dorfman, and Alisha Boe, All got matching semicolons: tattoos.
Dylan Minnette hadn’t read the book before he started filming the series. And as far as we know he still hasn’t. He said he didn’t want to confuse the character in the book with the character in the show. So he didn’t read.
Skye is played by Sosie Bacon, Who, just so happens to be Kevin Bacon’s daughter.
21) Bleeding man
Hannah uses a specific nail varnish to write on her tapes. It’s called Endless Blue by Sinful Colors. The artwork in the cafe has a connection to Dylan Minnette’s band. In the second episode of 13 Reasons Why Hannah and Jess ask Alex about a new picture on the wall at the coffee shop. He says it looks like a bleeding Man. Dylan is in a band IRL and one of their songs is called 'bleeding Man’.
Both seasons were filmed throughout northern California in cities like Sebastopol, Vallejo and more.
Brandon Larracuente, who played the role of Jeff Atkins, also auditioned for the role of Justin Foley.
24) Panic Attack
One of Alisha Boe’s, most difficult scenes to shoot during Season 2 was Jessica’s Panic attack at the mall because people were standing everywhere and `` It was a very emotionally impactful day Overall.‘’
Proceeds from the second 13RW soundtrack will go towards The Trevor Project and Crisis Text Line two organizations that offer suicide prevention resources to those in need.
13 Reasons Why was originally supposed to be a movie but to fit in Hannah’s whole story. It was turned into a TV series.
The name Clay is symbolic because he is reshaped and molded by what happens to Hannah and others around him. And the name Hannah is a palindrome to represent the two sides of the tapes she records.
Katherine Langford would play the piano to comfort herself between takes when feelings became overly intense.

Katherine also watched “The Office” to recover from emotionally and mentally difficult shoots.
30) Dylan’s Character
Dylan Minnette has played a character named Clay, twice: ( Saving Grace and 13 Reasons Why ) and has played two characters with a love interest named Hannah (Goosebumps and 13 Reasons Why ).

The character of Skye is an amalgamation of two people from the novel, A friend of Clay’s and an unnamed cafe waitress.
32) Ross Butler
Ross Butler starred in the Netflix show ‘Riverdale’. At the same time as ‘13 Reasons Why’. He dropped from the second season of ‘Riverdale’ to focus on’13 Reasons Why’.

Selena Gomez has been involved with this project for a long time. The superstar and her mom Mandy Teefey first discovered the book in 2008 at Barnes & Noble and soon after negotiated the rights with Asher. They’re both executive producers on the series.
