The Ajusco Summit Trail is a popular hiking trail located in the Ajusco National Park in Mexico City. The trail is approximately 6.5 km (4 miles) long and takes about 3-4 hours to complete, depending on your pace and fitness level.

The trail begins at the entrance of the park and follows a steep and rocky path that leads to the summit of Ajusco mountain, which stands at 3,937 meters (12,917 feet) above sea level. Along the way, hikers will encounter a variety of flora and fauna, including pine trees, wildflowers, and various bird species.

There are some rocks that can make it difficult to reach the top in wet conditions. After Pico del Aguila, you will descend slightly before you climb to Cruz del Marquez. These two places offer stunning views of the surrounding area and the city.

The trail can be challenging, especially for those who are not used to hiking at high altitudes. Hikers are advised to bring plenty of water, snacks, and sunscreen, as well as appropriate hiking gear such as sturdy shoes and a hat.

If you go during the dry season, and before the smog sets in, the view from the summit is spectacular. There is no better place to see the entire valley than the summit. Clear days can be seen to the NW by Izta, Popo, Tlaloc, and Telapon. On exceptionally clear days, I have heard that you can even see Nevado De Toluca to your west. You will find maguey, wild roses as well as rare owls, rabbits, and many other animals in the Park. The slopes of Ajusco are covered with pine forests and scrub oak, while the summit was sacred to Aztecs because it was used for worship. Ajusco, like many other major volcanoes around Mexico City, played an important role in the daily life of the Aztecs. Ajusco has evidence of an Aztec presence that dates back to the 12th or 13th centuries.

Once at the summit, hikers are rewarded with stunning panoramic views of Mexico City and the surrounding mountains. The trail is open year-round, but it is best to hike during the dry season, which runs from November to April.
