Education for All: A Documentary

About the Documentary:

The opening shot of documentary begins with a teacher who is teaching the students in a primary class. The Teachers explains that, today in India 4% of children never starts the school, 58 % don’t complete their primary schools and 90% don’t complete the school.

This documentary tells us that the dropout in Rural area is more than the Urban area. The dropout rate is more in girls as compared to the boys. The core reasons of dropout in girls are early marriage or when they hit the puberty.

The documentary also highlights the issue of social inequality and Education inequality and how they go hand in hand. The religion and cast also plays an important role in the life of the people. They give very limited opportunities to the person who is from lower cast.

In this documentary it is seen that in the Kuber Nagar Ahmedabad social-inequality casts a large shadow over the system. The lack of awareness and ignorance is the big issue.

The only school in locality is Manglam convent school, which is very difficult to reach and environment near the school was very unhygienic an dangerous.

Critical appreciation of the documentary:

The documentary touches upon all the important aspect which are to be taken into consideration for increasing the education level of the country.  This documentary also informs about the RTE (Right to Education). Many people were not aware about the fact that there is 25% of reservation for Socially and Economically weaker section in the schools. It is seen that people from weaker section do not have access an exposure towards the educational facilities available to them. Due to limited resources the education gets limited to only Primary school.

Gayatri Ben (Education: BA) one of the interviewees, when asked “Will you send your kids to college if they wish to?” She replied by saying yes, and she would try to manage the education fees of the child anyhow. Another interviewee Munni Ben (Education: None) said they are willing to educate their child as much as they want, but they do not have sufficient money to back them up.

Learning Experience:

In this documentary it seems evident that Education level of parents might lead to negligence about savings, future plannings and Government policies available, but for some there is no room for such planning it’s all about survival.

The only school which was there in locality Mangalam convent School, has taken the initiative to forego fees for some students who comes from weaker section of society. Their sole objective is to educate the children so that they can do well in their life.

Educational Implications:

Through this documentary it is evident that any school can take small or big step towards providing education facilities to children. Schools should also focus on vocational training of the students and treat every students the same without judging them on the basis of their caste or religion on
