
Differences in Surfactants
Choosing the right adjuvant when a product requires one can be the difference between a herbicide application that performs as expected and one that falls short. NIS, MSO, HSOC and COC all sound similar on a product label, but each works differently in the tank and on the leaf surface. That understanding is often the missing piece behind the more effective use of herbicide in Canada.
Why Adjuvants Matter in the First Place
An adjuvant is added to a tank mix to modify the biological activity or physical characteristics of the spray solution. The right adjuvant can help helps improve herbicide penetration, improve coverage, reduce drift, condition water, and protect the overall herbicide investment. Many herbicide labels include specific adjuvant recommendations, and those recommendations exist for a reason. The product will not perform at its full potential without the right adjuvant in the mix.
Non-Ionic Surfactants (NIS)
NIS products work by reducing the surface tension of a spray droplet. Lower surface tension allows the droplet to spread across the leaf surface rather than bead up and roll off. More spread means more leaf surface covered, whichencourages better absorption and improved efficacy.
NIS is the most commonly used surfactant class on the market. It tends to be the go-to choice when crop injury risk is a concern, since NIS products are gentler on sensitive crops than oil concentrates. Where a label calls for a surfactant and the tank mix includes a herbicide with elevated crop injury potential, a NIS is generally the safer selection.
Methylated Seed Oil (MSO)
MSO products are derived from vegetable-based oils sourced from crops like canola, soybeans or sunflowers and are considered the most aggressive adjuvant class relative to NIS or COC. They work by dissolving the waxy cuticle on a weed's leaf surface, allowing for faster and more complete uptake of the active ingredient.
This makes MSO the preferred choice in hot, dry, droughty conditions, when weeds build a thicker waxy cuticle as a stress response. The trade-off is that this aggressive action on the leaf surface can increase the risk of crop injury under certain conditions, so label guidance should always be checked closely before selecting an MSO over a gentler option.
High Surfactant Oil Concentrate (HSOC)
HSOC sits as something of an evolution of the traditional crop oil. These products are emulsifiable, oil-based adjuvants containing twenty-five to fifty percent surfactant along with a minimum of fifty percent paraffin or mineral oil by weight. Because the surfactant load is higher, use rates for HSOC products are generally half of what is required for a standard COC or MSO.
The benefit here is that growers get strong leaf penetration and coverage at a lower application rate, which can be a meaningful consideration when managing input costs across a large operation.
Crop Oil Concentrate (COC)
COC surfactants are added to improve adhesion and coverage on the plant surface, while also acting as a humectant, keeping the leaf surface moist for longer than water alone would allow. That extended moisture window gives the herbicide more time to penetrate the waxy cuticle, increasing the amount of active ingredient that actually enters the plant.
COC tends to outperform NIS specifically in low humidity, drought-stressed conditions, or when larger, more mature weeds are present. Some COC formulations also fall into the HSOC category, blurring the line slightly between the two classes depending on the specific product blend.
Where Each Adjuvant Fits Best
Selecting the right surfactant comes down to matching the product to the conditions in the field:
● NIS works well for general-purpose tank mixes and is the safer choice when crop injury risk is a concern
● MSO is best suited to hot, dry conditions or when targeting weeds with a thick waxy cuticle, with attention paid to crop tolerance
● HSOC offers strong performance at a lower use rate, making it efficient where oil-based activity is needed without the full COC application volume
● COC performs best under drought stress or against larger, more established weeds, where extended leaf moisture is the priority
Reading the Label Before Reaching for the Jug
The herbicide label is always the starting point. Many products list a specific adjuvant requirement, others leave the decision open depending on tank-mix partners or field conditions and some don’t require an adjuvant at all. Hard water can also interfere with herbicide performance regardless of which surfactant class is chosen, so water conditioning agents are worth considering alongside the surfactant decision in certain situations.
A well-matched adjuvant protects the investment already made in crop protection solutions sitting in the tank. Getting this detail right is a small step that has an outsized impact on the season's weed control results.
