Antique Coins Value

Can you guess that some antique coins have fetched between $10,000 and $10,000,000 at auction?

Today my post is about antique silver, which has been a personal passion of mine for quite some time, whether it's jewelry or knives.

I want to share some facts about identifying Antique Silver, in particular coins, namely:

  • Silver that is over 100 years old;

  • A specific marking and location that may date back to 1300;

  • A particular smell, because over the years, even with perfect storage, there is an effect on the metal;

  • The weight is different depending on the period;

  • Marking style and appearance: engraving and stamping from relevant popular eras such as Rococo, Neo-Classical, Art Deco, and Art Nouveau;

Many collectors of antique silver make collections from specific periods or hold specific craftsmen /smiths, manufacturers/ such as Paul Storr, Omar Ramsden, Georg Jensen, etc.

Factors to consider when it comes to antique silver are:

  • Clear, worn, or preserved specific marking;

  • Good color;

  • Originality and genuineness of condition;

  • The violations that have been inflicted on the metal over the years and re-transmission;

  • Are the initials of the owners of the silver available or are parts of them not visible? This is one of the most important factors for collectors. The individuality of the item is key in determining value;

  • Lost and damaged parts;

In 1844, legislative changes were passed, making it an offense to repair or add specific details or markings to a work without the corresponding distinctive marks, with which it was created.

That, unfortunately, makes antiques with corrections illegal to sell on the market today, no matter how well-restored they are.
