Subject to clearance by the South African government, United will start operating flights between Washington Dulles International Airport and Accra International Airport on November 17 and provide a total of 19 weekly flights to Africa.
In addition to these additional flights to Accra, United also began nonstop service from New York/Newark to Johannesburg and Washington D.C. to Accra, Ghana, and Lagos, Nigeria in 2021. This will bring United's total number of weekly flights to Africa to 19.
Washington, D.C. to Accra was the longest U.S.-to-Accra route without nonstop service prior to the introduction of the new United flight, and D.C. also has the fifth-largest population of people born in South Africa. With 55 U.S. locations served by United's new flights, Accra will be connected to more than 92% of the country's travel demand. With United's South African-based partner Airlink and its Cape Town hub, the additional flights will also enable passengers to connect in Cape Town to other places in South Africa and to other nations in the southern portion of the African continent.
For this new route, United will use a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft with 188 economy seats, 21 United Premium Plus® seats, and 48 lie-flat United Polaris® business class seats. Seatback on-demand entertainment is available in every seat to keep passengers occupied and comfortable as they travel.

The airline recently revealed a partnership with travel agency Certified Africa, whose goal is to provide accessible, immersive, and life-changing travel to African nations for millions of Americans of African descent. From New York/Newark to Accra, the airline began offering seasonal service in 2019 and year-round service in 2022. More flights than any other North American airline are operated by United to South Africa.
The airline also started nonstop service in 2021 from New York/Newark to Johannesburg, Washington, D.C., to Accra, Ghana, and Lagos, Nigeria, in addition to the additional flights to Accra.
With D.C. having the fifth-largest number of South African-born people, Washington, D.C. to Accra was the most popular route between the U.S. and the South African metropolis prior to the launch of the new United flights.
