Planning to apply for an Australian Permanent Residence (PR), but do you know a skills assessment is vital? Well! Many people worldwide are migrating to Australia, but it is mandatory to obtain a skills assessment before processing visa applications. If you wish to move to Australia i.e. Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne, Migration Skills Assessment is obtained.

The skills assessment is issued by concerned skill assessing authorities, organisations that check applicants' skills, work experiences and qualifications to meet the standard of relevant occupations in Australia.

Every skill-assessing authority has different skilled occupations and only accepts the relevant one; it's the applicant's responsibility to contact the authority to obtain the skill assessment of their profession.

Tips for Skills Assessment

Some of the essential tips for the skills assessment are highlighted below.

  • Choose Suitable Occupation - Choosing the right occupation might be a difficult step for skills assessment. Applicant's nominated occupation must meet the skills like work experience, qualifications or career progression meet the criteria.

  • Understand Job Category and Fit into It - The Australian industries are different and assess employment roles against ANZSCO (Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations); it lists an example of each occupation requiring qualifications, employment and expected skill level.

  • Do not Despair - If the applicant's work experience is not the same as they are applying for the skills assessment, there are other options they can apply for other skill migration which matches their criteria.

  • Impact of Field of Studies - The applicant's qualification matters; if they are studying any subject that is not highly relevant to Australian industry standard practices, they cannot assess positively in the occupation.

  • Primary Employment Roles - Applicant will perform the tasks required in the skill level of the nominated occupation because it is outlined in ANZSCO.

  • Assure Work Experience Highly Relevant - Applicants demonstrate that they have performed the job at the skill level requirement and may fulfil the skills assessment criteria.

  • Proof of the Level of Seniority - The assessing authority will demand an organisational chart to assess the managerial occupations and a few additional ones; they require proof of projects the applicant was involved in.

  • Combination of Qualification and Employment - Applicants should understand the combination of both qualification and employment; if they do not meet all the criteria, they should avoid applying and understand the terms first.

  • Evidence of Self-Employment - Those self-employed applicants must provide proof (as documentation) of their business registration details, accountant, bank statements, taxation evidence, client testimonials, contracts and proof of their projects.

Visas Categories or Streams

Those applying for the below visas categories or streams might need a skills assessment.

General Skilled Migration Visas (GSM)

Under a GSM visa, the applicant needs to choose the suitable skills assessment for the nominated occupation:

  • Skilled Nominated Visa (subclass 190)

  • Skilled Independent Visa (subclass 189) - Points-tested stream

  • Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (subclass 491)

  • Skilled Regional (Provisional) Visa (subclass 489) - invited pathway

The applicant must have a relevant occupation listed on the Skilled Occupation List (SOL) for these visa subclasses. Before submitting the visa application, the applicant must obtain a skills assessment from the nominated occupation.

When invited to apply for the points-tested visa, the applicant's skills assessment must be valid. It will be calculated as follows:

  • The skills assessment will be valid for 3 years if no validity period is shown from the issued date.

  • Sometimes the skills assessment validity period shows less than 3 years.

  • Sometimes the skills assessment validity period shows more than 3 years.

Employer-Sponsored Visas

  • Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) - The skills assessment is not required in the temporary residence transition and labour agreement streams but is necessary for the direct entry stream. Before the visa application date, it is essential to obtain the skill assessment result.

  • Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme (subclass 187) - The skills assessment is not required in the temporary residence transition stream but is necessary for the direct entry stream. Applicant must have an occupation listed on IMMI 12/096 SOAA (Specification of Occupations and Assessing Authorities) to get a positive skills assessment. The applicant must have skills assessed suitable by assessing authority before making the visa application and obtain the results.

Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (TSS)

As part of the visa application process, it is mandatory for applicants to take a skills assessment. Follow the steps below while applying for visa applications.

  • For a temporary skill shortage visa (subclass 482), check that it is mandatory to have a skills assessment.

  • Applicants must have completed or begun their skill assessment within the 3 years before application submission.

  • To avoid processing delays, the applicant includes their reference number of skills assessment.

  • Evidence of exemption (any) if the applicant is eligible.

Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485)

The applicant should nominate an occupation listed on the MLTSSL (Medium to Long Term Strategic Skills List); it must be relevant in skills assessing authority to become eligible for the 485 visa — graduate work stream. It's the applicant's responsibility to obtain a skills assessment by contacting the assessing authority, and each authority has its assessment procedures, charges and timeframes. The skills assessment is required in the graduate work stream but not in the post-study work stream to support the application.

Steps

Follow the steps below to know how to get a skills assessment.

  • Contact Assessing Authority - Before applying for a visa, contact the skills assessing authority to check whether the nominated occupation is suitable and organise them. Each skill assessing authority has its charges, procedures or timeframes. The skills assessment may take time and vary in various authorities.

  • Receive Skills Assessment - Applicants will receive the certificate and provide the scanned copy in the visa application; if someone does not get the positive assessment result, they cannot apply for the skilled migration visa.
