India has 28 states as of now. However, the number of states is increased from the time of Independence. Many union territories were converted into free states. At the same time many states were segregated to form new states. Uttarakhand is segregated from Uttar Pradesh state to form a new state. Similarly, Chatisgarh was differentiated from Madhya Pradesh. A new state Jharkhand was segregated from Bihar.
Telangana is also a new state and earlier it was a part of Andhra Pradesh. In 1960, Gujarat and Maharashtra were formed out of a single stated called Bombay. This list contains states and capitals of india with union territories.
