The name and formation of Singapore Merlion, combine two elements, fire, and lion. “Mer" means the sea, and "lion" are combined to represent Singapore's origin as a fishing village when it was called Temasek, which means "sea town" in Javanese and Singapore's original name—Singapura—meaning "lion city" or "Kota singa".
