Hichki is one of those uncommon Bollywood films which has a strong message to convey. Just like Taare Zameen Par and Paa, the film’s subject is fresh, sensitive, emotional and intelligent. You will easily get involved in the film as the movie progresses, keeping aside all the predictions that you were supposed to make.
Rani Mukherji Has Done A Great Comeback
We all knew that Rani Mukherji had great potential. We had already seen it in Black, Talaash, No One Killed Jessica and Mangal Pandey: the Rising.Our expectations were already high with Hichki and having exceeded them, Hichki is a super comeback from Rani Mukherji.
Tourette’s Syndrome Is A Sensitive Theme
Unlike most of the Bollywood stories that are centred on social issues, Hichki brings a different theme. In fact, it is a challenging movie to do at this point in Bollywood, because if people fail to connect with the film, it becomes a great mess. But you will not be disappointed by Hichki.
Just like Amir Khan’s Taare Zameen Par, which discussed Autism by way of a student-teacher relationship, and Big B’s Paa, which showed dealing with the genetic disorder, Progeria, Rani’s Hichki is based on the nuances that a person with Tourette’s Syndrome faces.
The majority of the audience is unaware of Tourette’s Syndrome and the only information available to them is what the web provides them. Under such circumstances, where people haven’t met anybody with this disorder, convincing them to believe in the story is tough.
Teacher Taming Students Is A Predictable Story
Coming to the storyline, we can predict it very easily. A young girl, Naina Mathur, who lives proudly with Tourette’s Syndrome, struggles in the Mumbai city as she aspires to be a teacher. She believes that she was born to be a teacher.
And so, she gives multiple interviews and faces numerous rejections until she lands in a top school, where she is given the charge of the most notorious class of the school. This class comprised of students who came from slum families and were studying here free of cost.
But somehow the school administration and other students could not accept them. Thus, they didn’t accept the school’s discipline and sophistication either. Naina knew what uneasiness being unfit in the world causes and so she decided to tame them.
The Screenplay Is Totally Unpredictable
Seeing her willpower and determination, to create her stand in the world, the naughty kids also decided to create a unique identity in the world. They got aware of the dreams and aspirations that their parents had for them. They knew they had to move out of the slums soon and showed that zeal on screen.
The portrayal of Tourette’s Syndrome is done as naturally as possible. The special ability that people with this kind of syndrome possess is highlighted beautifully. The treatment given to the subject in Hichki is with respect and grace. It is not like things have been messed up for entertainment value. It is a heart touching film, which will remind you of your school days.
With a critics rating of 3.5, Hichki is a must watch for this weekend.
