Where is red sandalwood found?

Red sandalwood trees are found in the Seshachalam hills of the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. These wood found in the four districts of Andhra Pradesh, Nellore, Kurnool, Chittoor, and Cuddapah, bordering Tamil Nadu. Apart from these places, there are no such red sandalwood trees anywhere in the world. These precious trees grow only in the Seshachalam hills. Red sandalwood can be immersed in water and this is its uniqueness, in a way it is also its identity.

Uses of red sandalwood

Red sandalwood is used to make medicine, beauty products, furniture, musical instruments, and in worship.

As per reports, this rare plant species has been listed as 'Near Threatened' by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) due to its over-exploitation. A tonne of red sandalwood wood is worth around Rs 1.5 crore in international markets, as it is in high demand for making musical instruments and furniture, apart from coloring food items and medicinal preparations.

 How is it smuggled?

Smuggling it is very difficult as STF personnel are always deployed. It cannot be smuggled by a single man, it would have been a gang. There is a risk of life in it, yet people smuggle it by risking their lives.

 It is highly demanded in abroad

These woods are in demand in many other countries including China, Japan, Singapore, UAE, Australia. But the highest demand is in China. Most of the smuggling also happens here. The demand is high for furniture, decorative items, traditional musical instruments.

Security forces are always deployed

There is a strict security system to prevent smuggling of this precious wood. Road, water and sky… Cases of smuggling of blood sandalwood have been coming to the fore through all the three routes. To avoid getting caught, many times smugglers take it by making powder. STF personnel are deployed in the area to stop its smuggling and to keep an eye on illegal activities.

Laws have been made to prevent smuggling.

A provision has been made for 11 years in jail and fine if caught while smuggling. Many smugglers of red sandalwood have also been arrested. Police keep a close watch on these areas
