Indian Premier League or IPL is India ka Tyohaar. No doubt, it is one of the most popular leagues all around the globe. The craze of IPL is so high that a few cricketers even miss out there international matches for it.
Every year we eagerly wait summers to cheer and support our favorite teams. Not only IPL is considered a successful tournament as it is a sure-shot profit for investors, but also because it gives exposure to a lot of young talent. Many uncapped cricketers perform extraordinarily and come into the eyes of selectors.
IPL started in the year 2008. So let's check out that which team won the IPL title straight from year one.
Following is the list of the IPL winning teams alongside the year they won.
IPL Season 1 (2008) winner: Rajasthan Royals (RR)
India had never experienced anything like this before. So, there was much craze among the people to cheer and support teams of the cities they live.
No doubt, IPL was a huge success. Both the investors as well as the cricketers were overwhelmed by the results.
The final match of the first season of IPL was played between Rajasthan Royal, lead by Shane Warne, and MS Dhoni lead Chennai Super Kings in Mumbai.
After a thrilling finale, Rajasthan Royals emerged victorious on the last ball and won the first season of IPL.
IPL Season 2 (2009) winner: Hyderabad Deccan Chargers (HDC)
The first season of IPL doubled the excitement for people. They were waiting for the next with much enthusiasm.
But unfortunately, due to some reasons, the second season of IPL was not allowed to be conducted in India.
The officials decided to let some other country host the second season of IPL instead of canceling it.
IPL season 2 was decided to be played in South Africa. The finale was between Hyderabad Deccan Chargers, lead by Adam Gilchrist, and Royal Challengers Banglore, lead by Anil Kumble, in Johannesburg.
Another last ball decider match. However, Hyderabad Deccan Chargers won the IPL Season 2.
IPL Season 3 (2010) winner: Chennai Super Kings (CSK)
Good news for the fans, IPL was back in India. The season was a blast.
Finally, after a couple of years of wait, our caption cool bagged the first title of IPL in 2010. It was the start of the rise of Dhoni's career, and from then on, he seemed impossible to be chased.
The finale was in Mumbai between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians. People went crazy as on one side, it was their favorite Captain Cool, MS Dhoni, and on the other side, it was the God of cricket, Sachin Tendulkar.
However, Chennai Super Kings comfortably won the match and got titled as the winners of IPL Season 3.
IPL Season 4 (2011) winner: Chennai Super Kings (CSK)
One trophy was not enough for a champion team like CSK.
The 4th season of IPL began just after a week of the ICC World Cup, where India emerged victorious after 28 years under the captaincy of MS Dhoni.
CSK, under the leadership of MS Dhoni, wanted to continue the winning streak of their captain. The finale was in Chennai between Royal Challengers Banglore and Chennai Super Kings.
The team in yellow comfortably defeated the team in red after scoring the massive total in the first innings.
Chennai Super Kings won two back-to-back seasons of IPL.
IPL Season 5 (2012) winner: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
The winning streak of Chennai Super Kings was broken by Shahrukh Khan's team Kolkata Knight Riders.
It was a fierce battle between the two in Chennai. Surprisingly, KKR managed to chase the total scored by CSK in the last over.
Therefore, Kolkata Knight Riders won the fifth season of IPL.
IPL Season 6 (2013) winner: Mumbai Indians (MI)
Mumbai Indians fans still wonder why it took them so long to win their first title. But never mind, there they were in 2013, crowning themselves as winners.
The finale was in Kolkata against Chennai Super Kings. But it was MI bowler's day as they overpowered CSK. Other than MS Dhoni, who scored 63 off 45 balls, no other batsmen of CSK scored beyond 18.
Therefore, Mumbai Indians won the IPL Season 6.
IPL Season 7 (2014) winner: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
This season finale was not only related to cricketers but also to the Bollywood industry. Where on one side, it was King Khans, Kolkata Knight Riders, on the other side, it was Priety Zinta's Kings XI Punjab.
The match was super interesting with tons of ups and downs but KKR emerged victoriously. The audience at the Banglore stadium experienced one true nail-biting match.
So, Kolkata Knight Riders won the seventh season of IPL and their second.
IPL Season 8 (2015) winner: Mumbai Indians (MI)
One was trophy was also not enough for Mumbai Indians as well.
The finale was again in Kolkata against the same old opponent, Chennai Super Kings, and surprisingly the results were also the same.
Yeah! it was a Deja Woo.
So, Mumbai Indians won the eighth season of IPL and their second.
It was sad to know that few cricketers were involved in spot-fixing and as a result, two IPL teams, Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings were banned for a couple of years.
In place of these two teams, a couple of new teams were introduced for those 2 years. They were Gujarat Lions(GL) and Rising Pune Supergiants(RPS).
IPL Season 9 (2016) winner: Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)
It was a thrilling finale in Banglore between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers Banglore, with more than 400 runs being scored in 20 overs.
We also witnessed the Gayle storm along with classic Kohli's knock. Despite all this, RCB was 8 runs short after the final ball of the match.
Sunrisers Hyderabad won the ninth season of IPL, second overall and first in their new franchise.
IPL Season 10 (2017) winner: Mumbai Indians (MI)
Mumbai Indians became the first team to win 3 titles of IPL. It was a thrilling finale in Hyderabad against Rising Pune Supergiants and Mumbai Indians won the match just by 1 run.
People usually believed high-scoring matches are thriller but after this one, everyone knew that in IPL any match can turn into a nail-biting one.
However, a win is a win, even if it's by a single run.
Mumbai Indians won the IPL season 10 and their third overall.
Remember, the ban period was over and Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings were ready to hit back to the IPL in the 11th season.
IPL Season 11 (2018) winner: Chennai Super Kings (CSK)
Chennai Super Kings were making their comeback in the IPL and fans were crazy to see their favorite players back in the yellow jersey.
The MS Dhoni impact was clearly seen by the audience and when they lifted the trophy at the end of the season, there would be no one happier than CSK's fans. The fans waited for 7 years to see that moment again.
The finale was in Hyderabad between Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad. Earlier in the same season, both teams had 3 head to head matches and none was won by SRH.
The 4th one went the same. We got to see a sensational century by Shane Watson in the final, leading to an easy win for CSK.
So, Chennai Super Kings won the eleventh season of IPL and their third.
IPL Season 12 (2019) winner: Mumbai Indians (MI)
Two top teams, each with 3 IPL titles, had a clash in Hyderabad.
However, after another nail-biting thriller, Mumbai Indians won the twelfth season of IPl by just 1 run becoming the first team to win 4 IPL titles.
IPL Season 13 (2020) winner: Mumbai Indians (MI)
The hunger for the win for Mumbai Indians was not over. They continued their winning streak in the thirteenth season in Dubai.
Due to the COVID-19 outbreak, IPL was not conducted at its scheduled time. After a long delay, the officials finally decided to conduct the IPL in UAE in September.
There were difficulties faced by the cricketers as well as the staff members but hopefully, none resulted in any casualty. However, many teams suffered as their important players missed out on matches due to sickness.
But, the show must go on. The finale was played in Dubai between Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians. DC scored a decent total but was not enough to stop the unstoppable and in-form Mumbai Indians.
Mumbai Indians easily chased the target and won the thirteenth season of IPL and their fifth overall.
A surprising fact in this season was that Chennai Super Kings was not able to play the qualifiers. It was the first time in IPL that Chennai Suoer Kings was not seen in the top 4.
IPL Season 14 (2021) winner: Chennai Super Kings (CSK)
IPL was back in India again and the fourteenth season went on with all the precautions and no audience. We have seen some extraordinary performances from all the teams. The first half of the tournament was played in India and the latter half was played in UAE.
The finale was played between MSD's CSK and King Khan's KKR on 15th October 2021. CSK defeated KKR comfortably bagging the title for the fourth time.
"We’ll come back stronger, that’s what we are known for", that's what the captain cool earlier said and proved it as well.
We earlier thought RCB and DC had equal chances to be a winner this time. The way KKR played in the UAE leg and reached the finale with their aggressive cricket, they too had fair chances. But IPL is a league of Best Vs Best, so the best one wins.
Now, next season onwards will be more interesting with the Mega Auction to follow up where the current teams could only retain a maximum of 4 players with only 1 international player. Also, 2 new teams, Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants, will be added to the league.
So the festival will be going to be bigger and the competition would be the toughest.
IPL Season 15 (2022) winner: Gujarat Titans (GT)
Season of Firsts, as they said from Day 1. Both the new teams, LSG and GT dominated in the tournament and reached the playoffs at the earliest. However, GT's performance was something else. They produced a different match-winner in almost all the league games proving that they were not dependent on any single player to win the match.
The captain lead from the front. Hardik Pandya dominated in all three dimensions of the game and had a big role in making his team win the cup in the very first season.
The team is owned by CVC Capitals and the head coach were Gary Kirsten and Ashish Nehra.
The final was played in the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on 29th May 2022 against Sanju Samson's led Rajasthan Royals. Hardik Pandya won the player of the match in the finals while the orange cap and purple cap both went to RR(Jos Butler won the Orange Cap and Yuzvendra Chahal won the Purple Cap). Moreover, Mohammad Shami started the IPL Journey of Gujarat Titans by taking the wicket on the first ball of the first match and ending by again taking the wicket on the last ball of the final match.
