Almost twenty years ago, David Fincher's "Fight Club" went into wide release, drawing moviegoers into a tale of antagonistic American men who chase authenticity by knocking the shit out of one another in poorly lit basements, though it received mixed reviews and was initially seen as a financial disappointment. The film is based on a relatively unknown 1996 novel by Chuck Palahniuk of the same name.

Irreverent and yet oh-so-gratifying in its ugly beauty, David Fincher's sublime "Fight Club" provides raw insights that are considered 'normal' and delivers a reality that dares to examine the passivity of everyday life as so many people accept it.

The story deals with white-collar employees who are baffled by their capitalistic life. And they start a fight club called Project Mayhem. Today, people still quote fight club quotes, as it has become a focal point for traversing masculinity, white-male indignation, consumerism, and gender relationships which remains memorable for all movie lovers.

They are as follows:

1) It's only after we've lost everything that we're free to do anything.

This is one of the most memorable quotes from the fight club because it has such a potent meaning and makes sense because it gives you the term 'hitting the rock bottom'. At the same time, the term in everyday parlance suggests a terrible experience. In Tyler's use of the term, he means it more as reaching the absolute self. Once you're stripped away from your thoughts, wants, and desires, you become truly free.

2) We are the middle children of history, raised by television to believe that someday we'll be millionaires and movie stars and rock stars, but we won't. And we're just learning this fact,' Tyler said. 'So don't fuck with us.'

Tyler's message is that he and Project Mayhem have absolutely nothing to lose, conveying these lines to the Seattle police commissioner. They were not aware of the fact by which they were raised to believe they would achieve greatness inherently. Having realized that the world doesn't work that way, they feel angry and have nothing to lose. Without them, the world could not operate. The world needs them more than it needs another police commissioner.

3) It's easy to cry when you realize that everyone you love will reject you or die. On a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone will drop to zero.

In this quote, the Narrator says that people will cry if they are having difficulties in their lives. By saying this bunch of fight club quotes, he betrays his nihilistic view of life. Sleeping can take away his sorrow temporarily. He wants to change himself, but he can't; he needs to cry and lose himself in his despair.

Only by letting go of any hope can he rest. In the Narrator's worldview, we are all destined to die, and there is nothing any of us can do about it.  He is trying to say that we will lose our value after a while. We shouldn't put ourselves down, and fate takes over us and refrain from falling into the cycle of self-pity.

4) Today is the sort of day where the sun only comes up to humiliate you.

When you feel it and inflow, make hay, go for it, work for it, and achieve great things. When you are not feeling it, don’t just stop, be kind to yourself and wake up the next day by reminding yourself that not every day will be a bad day.

5) You are not a beautiful and unique snowflake. You are the same decaying organic matter as everyone else, and we are all part of the same compost pile.

By making this speech, Tyler is turning the oppression of his generation into a mantra recited by the Space Monkeys to one another as part of Tyler's philosophy, transforming it from disappointment into empowerment, removing any sense of individuality from these men and their lives.

6) Anything you're ever proud of will be thrown away.

This quote is taken from the bunch of fight club quotes that the narrator narrates; he isn't just disappointed at the realization that he will die; he's trading with the fact that everyone else will die, too. All of his possessions and accomplishments will be gone and forgotten, not only his but everyone's, and this thought can go from dissatisfaction to depression real fast.

7) Ever since college, I make friends. They get married. I lose friends.

Ah, that's the thing about college and er. Life. The circle of social life. Friendships are born, ended, and once you reach an age where it comes to a point where it's just some contacts.

8) Crying is right at hand in the smothering dark, closed inside someone else, when you see how everything you can ever accomplish will end up as trash.

Time goes on. It doesn't care about your pretty pictures, your excellent music, your lovely words. Your smallest accomplishments are immediately crushed by someone's more significant achievement, and that's what the narrator is trying to say. You're a random x or y in an equation of life and a placeholder for something better yet, remember you can do anything.

9) Every evening, I died, and every evening I was born. Resurrected.

The mention of resurrection is one of the key elements of the book that is nihilism. It also states that explicitly for the first time, the Narrator and Tyler are the same people.  The Narrator dies when he sleeps, effectively allowing for Tyler to be “born.”

10) If I could wake up in a different place, at a different time, could I wake up as a different person?

Numerous fight club quotes foreshadow the film's central revelation:  that the Narrator and Tyler Durden are the same people. However, here the question is about our issues of identity. How well do we know ourselves? Who we want to be?. You probably do not understand yourself as well as you think you do. Peer inside and read: who you are, what you want to do, and how you want to do it. The answer lies within YOU!

11) This is our world, now, our world, Tyler says, "and those ancient people are dead."

This is where the plot of the film is revealed, the project mayhem. They will blow up numerous financial buildings & historical relics as whatever is left in them and all that the ancestor did should be dead along with them.

12) At the time, my life just seemed too complete, and maybe we have to break everything to make something better out of ourselves.

There is only one you and you can't please everybody, at one point you have to break everything, every bound, and achieve something better, in turn being your best version. You'll get to your place in due time. Enjoy the journey.

13) The lower you fall, the higher you'll fly.

Mistakes are an inevitable part of life. This quote from fight club denotes that the more you make mistakes, the more you learn through them, and the higher will be chances of your success.

14) Maybe self-improvement isn't the answer; maybe self-destruction is the answer.

This one is not really from the movie but the book by the same name. In the film, Tyler and the narrator get on the bus and are sizing everything up, and he looks up at this Gucci ad with half-naked, chiseled men.

Narrator: "Is that what a man looks like?" Tyler: laughs, "Self-improvement is masturbation. Now, self-destruction..." and then the scene changes, and the quote never gets finished. We should embrace the pain, i.e., self-destruction, as it is the only way growth can happen, and you can move forward.

15) First, You've Gotta Know – Not Fear, Know – That Someday, You're Gonna Die.

The key to living life to the fullest is not to be afraid of dying as it is inevitable and eventually will come to you. But, that shouldn't stop you from really experiencing your life, and not to stay away from dangers but to embrace as it is necessarily the way to experience life fully.

16) I Am Jack's Complete Lack Of Surprise.

The perfect insider reference to the fact that you've seen it all and you know that Tyler and the narrator are the same; At this point, it becomes impossible to shock you. If you still don't get it, 'i am jack's complete lack of surprise,' go figure.

17) The First Rule Of Fight Club Is: You Do Not Talk About Fight Club. The Second Rule Of Fight Club Is: You Do Not Talk About Fight Club.

This is what we were talking about when we said we're going to break the rule of fight club. Apart from all the fight club quotes, this one remains the most memorable as it still keeps people wondering why Tyler Durden felt the need to make the first two rules of Fight Club the same. Don't talk about it. Seriously Tyler said it twice.

18) You Met Me At A Very Strange Time In My Life.

Someone said the timing is everything, and someone is right. Sometimes you meet the right person at the wrong time, and you may feel like you're missing out on something good. It's harsh to accept, but meeting someone at the wrong time means that a particular person is the wrong person. I told you it's harsh but the truth.

19) Everyone smiles with that invisible gun to their head.

Yes. You are not alone when it comes to smiling with an invisible gun to your head. That is when it comes to pretending to be happy. It's a normal occurrence for many of us, as at some point in time, we may pretend to be happy for the sake of those around us.

This is not intrinsically wrong and is even an indication of your moral regard for others' wellbeing. But despite everything, this habit is self-destructive. Try to be vocal and take help if you feel you need to.

20) We are not special. We are not crap or trash, either. We just are. We just are, and what happens just happens.

So, real talk the whole the absolute rule of the fight club is to break the rules. The word doesn't owe you anything so stop listening to gods, fathers, and advertising agencies; be yourself, and you'll be free. Don't follow every rule laid out to you, and if necessary, break them.

21) I wanted to destroy everything beautiful. I'd never have Burned the Amazon rainforest. I wanted to kill all the fish I couldn't afford to eat and smother the French beaches. I'd never see. I wanted the whole world to hit rock bottom.

Suppose the world would hit rock bottom, as the narrator has never failed to put it numerous times throughout the movie. The world would have to start over; no one would be above another person. If no one was above anyone else, there would be equality.

If there were equality, Tyler and the narrator would not have to answer to the people above them.

22) Who guys are in the fight club is not who they are in the real world. Even if you told the kid in the copy center that he had a good fight, you wouldn't be talking to the same man.

There is a fine line between the 'real' world and the world of fight club. In the real world, people are recognized by their status, job, or accomplishments, whereas in fight clubs, these same men are stripped to their core to engage in fights. When they leave the fight club, the distinction between the real world and the fight club should keep this distinction in mind to blend again in greater society.

23) All the ways you wish you could be, that's me. I look like you wanna look, I fuck like you wanna fuck, I am smart, capable, and most importantly, I am free in all the ways that you are not.

This line is spoken by actor Brad Pitt when in the fight club, Tyler, his character, says this to Jack upon learning that he and Jake are the same person. Jack did not feel that he could change his life on his own and felt trapped by it. Some people interpret it that Brad Pitt could be addressing the audience commenting on how celebrity is viewed and valued.

24) When the fight was over, nothing was solved, but nothing mattered. We all felt saved.

This quote is from the narrator's voiceover during a fight in which he is injured and has to go to the hospital for stitches. He comments on the spiritual aspects of fight club as men experience a sense of masculinity after fighting. However, it is just a tool to achieving a greater understanding of self and allows men to find a sense of purpose.

25) You wake up, and that's enough.

That's the first thing you should be grateful for. Don't let your troubles blind you to your daily blessings; never take anything for granted. Life is a blessing, and that breath that you just took that's a gift.

26) Which is worse: Hell or nothing?

This quote from fight club talks about the problem of hell. The question of hell is ethical in religion in which the existence of hell is questioned, and if  Hell exists; it is for the punishment of people whose lives on Earth are judged to have been sinful; some people go there, and there is no escape.

27) There are a lot of things we don't want to know about the people we love.

We spend too much of the time waiting on the sidewalk and watching people we love walk away from us. But take a moment and allow yourself to be loved by those who love you and take time to learn about the thing you don't know about them. Life's too short not to spend it with those who you love.

28) One minute was enough, Tyler said; a person had to work hard for it, but a minute of perfection was worth the effort. A moment was the most you could ever expect from perfection.

For Tyler, perfection is a double-edged sword. On one side. One can pursue perfection in the hope of achieving it, if only for a brief moment. On the other hand, it is fleeting. If you wanted something for a very long time and you've been working very hard towards it and say you achieved it. What would you do after that?

29) The Things You Own End Up Owning You.

This quote from the fight cub has been interpreted in many ways. We all are taught to have a better education, get a job and settle down having a good retirement plan, retirement funds, and stuff, and if we do all of those things, then we will be happy. But the thing is, you may achieve everything, still not be satisfied. Happiness is a state and is as versatile as the wind whistling through the air. Do what makes you happy.

30) When You Have Insomnia, You’re Never Really Asleep. And You’re Never Really Awake.

The quality of your rest matters just as much as the quantity, as it is imperative to have around seven to nine hours of sleep per night to function at your best varies between individuals.

31) If You Aren’t On Your Way To Becoming A Vet In Six Weeks, You Will Be Dead.

Tyler Durden wants people to stop procrastinating following their goals. He wants you to seize the day and stop making excuses, or stop having a fear of failure and start doing what you can to make your dreams come true. He goes to extremes saying this like an aspiring veteran and is more helpful than most self-help gurus.

32) May I never be complete, May I never be content, May I never be perfect.

It would be best if you always were content and happy but never be entirely satisfied. Always take up new challenges, make changes as per the opportunity presented, roll with the latest technology, and leap at the impediments. Once you have perfected something, It can lead to boredom, stubbornness and the progression and evolution come to an abrupt halt. In short, take every chance to improve!

33) You can't make an omelet without cracking an egg.

Fight club quotes usually circle around the central theme of achieving the impossible. When we use this adage we typically mean that it is impossible to achieve something important without there being some harmful effects.

34)  Ok. You fuck me, then snub me. You love me; you hate me. You show me a sensitive side; then you turn into a total asshole. Is this a pretty accurate description of our relationship?

Sometimes, relationships do potential damage, doing more harm than good, wrecking your self-esteem, and altering the course of life you laid for yourself.  You might not just be able to change how it affects you, but you can always walk from it.

35) We're consumers. We are the byproducts of a lifestyle obsession. Murder, crime, poverty, these things don't concern me. What concerns me are celebrity magazines, television with 500 channels, some guy's name on my underwear.

As our world gets bigger, complexity increases as we become the byproduct of lifestyle obsession, and it gets easier to get lost in the world, feel irrelevant. What you need to remember is you need to live your life and achieve your goals and dreams.

36) What Marla loves, she says, is all the things that people love intensely and then dump an hour or a day after.

Prolonging the inevitable, that's what Marla is trying to do. From the fight club quotes, it's evident that Marla acts as a counterpart for our protagonist where all he wants to do is get rid himself of all these useless, transient possessions, and  Marla intends to show them a little bit more love.

37) Nothing is static. Even the Mona Lisa is falling apart.

Here, Mona Lisa is taken as an example as it is something that is considered a timeless work of art. But it's still man-made, and nothing man-made is going to last forever that includes your future plans or the current fundament you have built. Everything is evolving and will fall apart at some point.

38) If you're male and you're Christian and living in America, your father is your model for God. And if you never know your father, if your father bails out or dies or is never at home, what do you believe about God?

In Tyler's universe, God is indifferent to the human condition. Tyler sees the need to turn to God, much like how a child turns to their parents for help or permission.  He lost his faith in God because his father left him.  He needs to ask him if he is doing the right thing or not, but his father wasn't there. Basically, Tyler is saying that a father should be a role model to their children.

39) Imagine when we call a strike, and everyone refuses to work until we redistribute the wealth of the world.

Read the first word of the sentence again. It was 1996  when Tyler Durden talked about wealth redistribution. It's 2021, and we're pretty sure this is a topic for conversation that will never cease to get people going.

40) I don't want to die without any scars.

Because scars mean you are strong enough to survive anything.
Fight club uses fighting as the ideal metaphor for doing painful things outside of your comfort zone. While watching the movies, it becomes apparent how important it is to step out of your comfort zone and live up to your potential. Make that your addiction!

41) The doctors and everyone were so excited because they thought you had this new cancer.

This may sound morbid, but it is the truth. Having something rare or something that hasn't been diagnosed yet makes a person enduring value to the medical community.

42) You know how they say you only hurt the ones you love? Well, it works both ways.

This quote from the fight club calls back to the popular belief “Love hurts” Everyone wants to be loved, but can we actually handle love enduring the pain it carries. Sometimes when we hurt one who is close to us, ultimately we hurt ourselves- because guilt, regret, and shame can torment us long after the hurt is done.

43) Being tired isn't the same as being rich, but most times, it's close enough.

The analogy used here is incredibly human about the turn of ritualized struggle that lends a type of wealth, albeit not a financial one, to the associates' lives. Still, it does make them feel alive in a way that material wealth never can.

44) This is your life, and it’s ending one minute at a time.

This quote from fight club is the core of the movie as yet again it speaks about the inevitable: Death. But first, you need to be aware and not fear but always and anytime be ready to embrace the fact that you are going to die.

You may think that you have all the time in the world to do amazing things, but you may not live to see that particular someday. The ultimate truth, your time here on earth is limited, so live unlimited. So, please do something that you love and leave your remarkable footprints on the earth!

45) If you are reading this, then this warning is for you: Every word you read of this useless fine print is another second off your life. Don’t you have other things to do? ….

Is your life so empty that you honestly can’t think of a better way to spend these moments? Or are you so impressed with authority that you give respect and credence to all that claim it? Do you read everything you’re supposed to read? Do you think everything you’re supposed to think?

Buy what you’re told to want? Get out of your apartment. Meet a member of the opposite sex. Stop the excessive shopping and masturbation. Quit your job. Start a fight. Prove you’re alive. If you don’t claim your humanity, you will become a statistic. You have been warned.

Tyler Durden is such an inspiring character. He doesn't tell you the motivational stuff, but what's the truth, what's the reality of the society you're living in. Fight club quotes and approaches will make you wonder about the profound messages and question society's "status quo."

Fight club is a movie with an underlying profound hidden message,  a reflection of the community, it's a depiction of the truth of how we have become the slaves of society, and it will make you think about your life, are you living it the way you want to.
