Delhi is a unique city, not only because of its rich heritage and culture but also because of the slangs it has given to entire India. The phrases used by people in the city are peculiar and speak of the plainly loud personality that Delhiites have.
Pataka, maal, chul, tauu, bhai, banda, bandi, jugaad, etc. are a few Delhi slangs that have gripped every Indian in NCR. They are outspoken, not caring about the surroundings and even people. But this doesn't mean they are devoid of life.
They have their own way to live life, with their own words and language, which you must know if you are planning to visit Delhi anytime sooner.
1. OYE
If Delhiites don’t call their friend with oye, they are not true friends. In fact, some of them use it to cover up their mistake of forgetting names too. 'Oye' hints that the speaker is a true Delhiite. It would bring no surprise if Delhi people save numbers with 'oye' and have over 50 'oye' in their contact list!
2. KYA SCENE?
The phrase has two meanings in Delhi. One is when anybody informs about a fight and the other is when you are trying to figure out the plan with your friends. Delhites wake up asking, 'Kya scene hai?'. And go sleeping confessing, 'Aaj scene ho gya!'. Don't get nervous when you hear it on the streets!
3. TUMSE NA HO PAYEGA
This word is always on every Delhiites tongue, even the Delhi girls. It refers to the time when somebody is fed up with someone else, to tell them that it is out of their league. In other words, they tell the person that sky and earth can unite, but 'Tumse na ho payega.'
4. BHAINS KI AANKH
When Delhi people are really surprised by knowing something, they say "bhains ki aankh". More than 10 out of 10 people use this phrase in their daily life. Even Alia Bhatt identifies Ranveer Singh in the MMT ad with the phrase 'Bhains ki aankh!'. So, if you hear this phrase, you are definitely in Delhi!!!
5. BHASSAD
Whenever a problem drops in the life of a Delhiite, this term has the highest relevance and frequency. Delhities substitute the problem or trouble with the word 'bhassad'. For example, “Abe jaldi aa, bhassad ho gyi hai yaha”. And the person listening to this term, hastily reaches the spot too. It is a magical word to gain attention, you see!
6. TOTA
This is the one-word substitution for hot and chic. People are addicted to using it in almost on a daily basis in Delhi, for they find attractive things around every day. Even you can be referred to as 'tota' in Delhi if you match up the TOTA qualifications of Delhiites. Just joking!
7. CHEP SAALA
When someone’s really un-classy and talks nonsense all the time, even when you are not willing to talk, the usual address is 'chep', distorted version of 'cheap'. Make sure you don't take 'chep' people with you on the trip to Delhi. They will always keep lingering around you, not letting you have fun.
8. BADE LOG
Although the word refers to the people of a rich, wealthy and high society, it is used in a sarcastic manner in Delhi for people who have a tendency of boasting! They are 'bade log' in eyes of Delhiites and deserve a silent slap. Consequently, the silent slap is hit by calling them 'bade log'.
9. FAAD HAI
The slang 'faad' is used to refer anything as super duper sexy. It is the Delhi equivalent of the word 'wow', used like regular daal-chawal. Almost all sentences end with this word. 'Kya faad idea hai, boss!' is the easiest example of this.
