Donkey Kong is a series of Japanese video games created by Miyamoto Shigeru. The series stars a gorilla named Donkey Kong, fellow gorillas, and orangutans working together to defeat anthropomorphized villains. Donkey Kong is one of the earliest examples of the platform game genre even before the term was coined; The American gaming press used climbing for games with platforms and ladders. As the first platform game to feature jumping, Donkey Kong required players to jump between gaps and jump over obstacles or approach enemies, setting the template for the future of platforming. With four unique stages, Donkey Kong was the most complex arcade game at the time of its release and one of the first arcade games to feature multiple stages, after Phoenix and 1980 by Gorf and Scramble. The video painting emphasizes the game's high level of difficulty compared to other classic arcade games. Winning the game requires patience and Mario's ability to accurately time the ascent. In addition to presenting the goal of saving Pauline, the game also gives players scores. Points are awarded for the following: jumping over obstacles; destroy objects with a power-up hammer; collect items such as hats, umbrellas, and purses (probably belonging to Pauline); remove studs from the platform and complete each stage (determined by a descending bounty counter). Players typically get three lives with a bonus of 7,000 points, although this can be modified via the game's built-in DIP switches. A life is lost whenever Mario touches Donkey Kong or any enemy object, falls too far through a gap or at the bottom of the platform, or lets the bounty counter reach zero.
