Ayushmann Khurrana is a screen name which is in the news for his selective choice when it comes to scripts. When he started picking up scripts, he never thought it would become so evident.

However, as his movies have released, majority of them have one thing in common - an untalked subject, a social taboo. Besides entertainment, these movies were throwing light on the darkest sides of our Indian society. (We even never thought they even exist)

From his debut film Vicky Donor to his last black comedy thriller Andhadhun, Ayushman Khurana came up with some untouched truths of the Indian society.

Let us have a closer look at Ayushman Khurana's off beat, unconventional, social taboo films.

Vicky Donor - 2012

The movie that fetched him his first ever Filmfare award for best debut actor male was actually the story of a sperm donor. A movie based on a topic that none of us has ever discussed.

No matter how drunk we were or how wild we got in our fantasies, we never discussed the sperm story. I mean who imagined that the thing on which single men have been investing their time and energy since ages could help them earn money?

But the movie Vicky Donor enlightened us. Especially with the growth of medical science, where IVF and surrogacy have become widely accepted, this subject should be talked about. But Vicky donor enlightened us.

Dum Laga Ke Haisha - 2015

The movie was based upon the thought “age, weight and height are just numbers when you are in love”. Prem Prakash Tiwari, the role played by Ayushman Khurana in this movie, was a school dropout boy of a below middle-class family of Haridwar.

He was forcefully married to an overweight but educated girl, Sandhya (Bhumi Pednekar). Prem at first didn't like his wife because she was fat but the director beautifully unfolds a cute love story between the couple.

The story clearly shows that looks are temporary but love is permanent. The songs of this movie also touched every heart and still rule some playlists.

Shubh Mangal Saavdhan - 2017

Erectile dysfunction is an issue which we read on the walls of every Indian city but we never discuss it. Most of us even crack jokes like “his rocket never flies” and so on without understanding the pain of the person suffering.

Shubh Mangal Saavdhan starring Ayushman Khurana and Bhumi Pednekar enlightened us with the same pain of a patient with erectile dysfunction. The love story of Mudit and Sugandha and how they discovered that Mudit (Ayushman Khurana) is suffering from this problem really made us go ROFL.

Though we felt bad when Sugandha ( Bhumi Dandekar) tried to help the actor in the park and ended up crying. Poor soul! But director R.S. Prasanna commendably presented a full family comic drama on silver screen.

Andhadhun - 2018

Andhadhun is a black comedy crime thriller directed by Sriram Raghavan. Andhadhun cast comprises of veteran actress Tabu, along with versatile actors Ayushman Khurana and Radhika Apte.

Raghavan with his perfect alignment glues us to our seats while lunatic twist in the tale kept us at the edge of the seat. Ayushman here too stole our hearts and blew our mind with slapstick comedy.

Ayushman is play acting blind Piano artist, while Tabu is acting the part of a loving wife. Radhika has an extended cameo. Putting all together, it ’s a must watch a movie in my list.

Badhai ho - 2018

From the Badhai Ho trailer, the theme of the movie that director Amit Sharma has tried to bring up is clear. The Badhai Ho movie is based on the 'unending sexual desires of parents’. We can imagine ourselves in the lead role’s place and how we will react if we get to know that at this age we are going to have a sibling. Freak! Yes, this is what we will end up saying.

The Badhai Ho director has tried to create a comedy-drama, with some onscreen chaos at first, and then acceptance of the fact of pregnancy by the family eventually. The film can also be taken as a sarcasm on the people of the Indian society who become judgemental on other’s lives (who chaar log). And here, its parents’ sex life!

The Badhai Ho film released on 19th October 2020 and was a blockbuster hit.

Dream Girl - 2019

Sounds like a female led movie? Well, it is not! Ayushmann donned a female avatar in the film, Dream Girl to become Puja, the Dream Girl of lonely singles across India. Besides the humorous plot, the film has a mass appealing subject, the working of adult hotlines.

Landing into a job at a shady adult hotline, where women sweet-talk with lonely men at night and get heavily paid in return, Ayushmann impersonates a women's voice. Each time he talks in the voice of Pooja, you actually pinch yourself to believe it’s really him!

We could have never thought of highlighting this aspect of our society, where we have aloof ourselves to such an extent that we need an adult hotline for help. A rare thought!

Bala - 2019

This Ayushman Khurana Movie discusses the taboo of baldness in Indian society. It is a romantic comedy and grips the viewers till the very end.

Article 15 - 2019

Discussing the widespread social evil of rape and discrimination in our society, Article 15 is yet another off beat movie of Ayushman Khurana. It shows the darkness and shadows in which people of lower castes live in India. And by the end, it convinces you to change something in our life immediately - your outlook.

Shubh Mangal Zyada Savdhaan - 2020

Homosexuality, lesbians and gays in Indian society - this was the trend breaking subject chosen by Ayushman Khurana for his next movie.

Gulabo Sitabo - 2020

While Gulabo Sitabo shows the old uncared heritage building of Lucknow city, it satirically remarks to the conditions of once rich lads in the modern towns.

Ayushman Khurana Has Become Selective When It Comes To Choice Of Scripts

So, these were the unconventional film contributions of Ayushmann Khurrana to Bollywood and the Indian society. They all dealt with topics which are still considered as a taboo in India.

We can say that Ayushmann Khurrana has now become selective about the type of scripts. And we hope that he keeps on entertaining us similarly in future.
